    Harbaugh getting some bad publicity recently. He dropped a long time UM Commit from Illinois in Erik Swenson, who will be just fine and on scholarship somewhere (Northwestern) in the Big 10. But not for the team he dreamed all his life of playing for an thought he had that locked up when Michigan accepted his verbal. Now a kid from Florida who has been verbally committed to UM for the last 7 months was also dropped by Harbaugh, he's not so happy about it. He's a DL named Rashad Weaver.

    Here's an article about this..

    I will say that while there is negative pub coming to Harbaugh over these, kids do the same thing all the time. They change their minds and the later in the game they do that the more harm they do to the program that was counting on them. There have been some cases of kids flipping on NSD and stunning the coach/school who was expecting their faxed LOI.

    "They said" artificial sweeteners were safe, WMDs were in Iraq and Anna Nicole married for love" ... "They said"

    All this over a 3 Star TE?

    When it said Harbaugh had an in house visit with him, did he spend the night? :)

    If this was Saban, there would accusations of all sorts of roster management and lying and trickery and thievery and processing and everything else, but with Harbaugh, it seems to be "oh well, it's Harbaugh". What gives? :?

    AJ,

    Harbaugh played for Riley when Riley coached the San Diego Chargers. Harbaugh's son, now on M's staff, was a graduate assistant coach for Riley at Oregon State. Given those ties, I suspect the speculation that there is a bad blood recruiting war going on is more internet blog BS.

    Old Time Recruiting...sure would fly today with the kids!

    *Joe Kuharich Notre Dame

    Two different recruits told very similar stories:

    Chuck Logan & Bob Meeker

    In Logan's case the Kuharich 'pitch' was: 'we have a scholarship for you, but if you don't take it someone else will'

    TE Logan went to NW(disappointing his Mom) and made All Big Ten for Ara & later played in the NFL

    In Meeker's case, he had already signed a conference letter of intent with Ara at NW. The Kuharich pitch was "we have 8 candidates for a scholarship at tackle and only 4 scholarships to give out. Do you want one or not?'

    Meeker came to ND and later played for Ara

    * Bo Schembechler Michigan

    A star HS linebacker(forget who, will have to look it up) received an invitation from Bo to visit Ann Arbor. The message said, '...come on this date or don't come at all'

    * Woody Hayes

    A Steubenville, Oh split end was ushered into see Woody during his visit. The two were discussing recent Ohio St football history when Woody took off his '69 Rose Bowl ring and tossed it to the recruit. The recruit examined the ring admiringly and then tried to give it back to Hayes. "Keep it" said Hayes. The stunned recruit protested to no avail. The recruit left with one of Woody's prize positions...or so it seemed.

    Although the recruit felt bad about the ring, he ultimately decided against going to Ohio St. A few years later he ran into Cornelius Greene, a Ohio St QB. Greene also had a '69 Rose Bowl ring that Woody had given him....apparently Woody kept a box of Rose Bowl rings in his desk drawer for just such recruiting occasions.

    *Ara Parseghian ND days

    Most recruits were ushered into to see Ara at the very end of their visit.
    Thom Gatewood said that he never saw Ara during his 2 day official visit until the last 2 hours.

    While this usually worked well for the Irish, it wasn't always the case.

    ND recruited a QB from my HS. The kid was all ND until the Ara office visit. The QB came away from the visit telling his parents(big ND fans) that Ara 'acted like a little tin god'. I assume Ara was all business & didn't tell the kid what he wanted(or expected) to hear. The recruit went to Washington-were he was beaten out at QB by Sonny Sixkiller(who remembers him?)

    Jimmy Cefalo, star HB visited ND and remembers celebrating the Irish BB victory over UCLA on the floor with fellow recruit Ken McAfee.

    Cefalo later complained that Ara kept calling him 'Bob' during their interview in Parseghian's office.

    Ara said that he didn't visit recruits in their home because, he explained, if he did it for one, he'd have to do it for all of them

    One poster here insists that Ara did visit HS QB David Humm in his home. That home was Las Vegas....wonder if Ara just wanted to go to Vegas...Humm went to Nebraska...Ara had to 'settle' for Tom Clements at QB in that recruiting class

    Great stories, especially Woody's box of NC rings. :D

    Bob Meeker was my classmate. I did not know him personally.

    Great read about the ones that got away. The Marshall Faulk one is hillarious...after the fact.

    Looks like it is Mississippi's turn in the barrel.
