Here's an article on the 2009 QB class. No surprise but my old stomping grounds (the inland empire of southern california) is well represented. It looks like Tennessee nabbed a pro-style QB from Upland. I was a little surprised by this because I thought they were going to try to become a spread option team.. Maybe Phil's doing this spread thing until he can get another passer on campus? Had the UCLA game not been moved up to Sept 1st, some of you guys travelling to the game could have checked him out.. But, since the game is played on 9/1 you guys will miss the start of his season by 4 days. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recr...paign=rsssrch&source=san+diego+state+football
Actually, Corey, Tennessee has two verbals from QBs who are more in the pocket-passer mold. Nunes and Bryce Petty are both Vol commits. Petty is said to be a little more athletic perhaps. Anyway, I think there is some confusion about Tennessee OC Dave Clawson's attack. I do admit that I haven't seen tape from his Richmond team but from what I understand he runs a West Coast style attack that spreads the field and although some components of the spread-option may be present, it's certainly not the primary trick in the bag. Clawson was OC at Villanova at the same time that they had Brian Westbrook. Westbrook did rush for 1000 yards but he also had 1000 yards receiving as well. I think the offense is going to be multi-dimensional. There is a lot of talk about using the "G-Gun" package with WR/ATH Gerald Jones lining up in the pocket. I do think you may see that package more this year but Tenn. used it last year as well. There is also talk of using S Eric Berry at the QB pos. which he played in HS. I think those packages are more about getting the ball in the hands of playmakers as often as possible more than they're about changing offensive philosophy.
You hit the nail on the head. Don't give away all our secrets though. Corey has been away from So Cal a long time. He still has contacts though. UCLA doesn't need any help... or do they?
ha! <t>my GLBs are going to come into that game looking like a platoon in retreat from the battlefield. I'm still trying to figure out who is going to block and then who is going to play QB.<br/> <br/> Karl Dorrell recruited very well at some positions, but others, like QB and OL, we are incredibly thin.</t>
My bad, Tom. I am certainly not taking UCLA lightly. Last year's trip to California should prevent anyone who claims the Orange from doing that. I honestly think the long ride out west is a great test for teams from the east. That being said, I fully expect Tenn. to win but I think it will be a dogfight. Tom, what do you think of Tennessee's recruiting class so far?
Seems to me that at one time in Dorrells tenure that UCLA was absolutely loaded at QB. Injuries though have hurt.
