You should have a top 10 class every year, UF is the flagship state school in a state rich in high school talent. A dead cat should be able to bring in a top 10 class. The fact that Miami can get a top 10 class pretty much out of recruiting only South Fla is a further example of how much talent there is in the state of Florida. It's the same in Texas, we are the flag ship state school in a state with a motherload of talent. We shouldn't have to have Mr. Feb to have a consistently top 10 rated recruiting class either. Same goes for USC, although they aren't a state school, they sit in the center of another motherload of talent. Even in their down years they always had a lot of talent on the squad.
I pretty much agree with that Terry but there are exceptions like FSU last year. They rebounded this year somewhat although they are not dominant in recruiting as they used to be.
Interesting that the ESPN guy is the only one of five who does not rate ND #2. In fact he has them all the way down in 9th. I don't care about recruiting rankings, but an objective observer has to wonder if ESPN has an agenda Ya think?
8)  Some prospects have yet to announce their intentions, most notably No. 1 QB Terrelle Pryor (Jeannette, Pa.), so these rankings may change. Here are the post-signing day Top 25 classes. 1. Miami 12 ESPN 150 prospects Coach Randy Shannon did an outstanding job landing top-tier defensive talent in his first full recruiting class. The Canes boast five of the top seven outside linebackers, led by the top three -- Arthur Brown (Wichita, Kan./East), Sean Spence (Miami/Northwestern) and signing day recommit Ramon Buchanan (Melbourne, Fla./Palm Bay). The talent continues up front with Marcus Fortson (Miami/ Northwestern), the country's No. 1-rated defensive tackle. Taylor Cook (Eagle Lake, Texas/Rice) and Jacory Harris (Miami/Northwestern) have different types of games but are both quality quarterback prospects. ESPN 150 receivers Aldarius Johnson (Miami/Northwestern) and Davon Johnson (Miami/Booker T. Washington) both project to haul in a bunch of balls in their careers.
Miami certainly has an impressive class coming in. If Shannon can coach these kids to their potential, Miami may be on its way back. Hey Gonz, what do you think of the Canes' new home field?
Sid, it seems that at least one of those five has to be different when it comes to the rankings. For the Gators it's Scout that has us at number 11, for Notre Dame it's ESPN that has you at 9 and for Miami it's Lemming that has them at 9th One real consistent though is Alabama, four firsts and a third.
I will have to back track a little here. I read that UF got 12 out of state commits compared to 10 instate commits. I'm really surprised. One thing that Mack Brown committed to was to support the coaches in Texas and if all things were equal he would always take the Texas kid over an out of state kid. He's very popular with Texas HS Coaches as a result. With 3 major programs in Fla and a couple of up and comming programs I would think that Meyer would want to lock up the state of Fla first and foremost. Then just fill in where necessary/possible with kids from out of state. Terry
I think for the most part Terry we will recruit Florida kids and this year is probably the exception. However in S. Florida Miami has things pretty well locked down as far as getting the players they want, FSU has their area's also. Regardless I think that we will get Florida kids more in the future. I guess also I might add that the two we lost on signing day were both Florida kids, one to Miami and one to Michigan. If we had kept those two we would have 12 from Florida.
Sid I just can't think of why ESPN a/k/a ABC has an agenda as far as ND a/k/a NBC's College Football.
Interesting article Terry. I knew some of that information but not all. I wish the September rankings got a little more publicity.
I agree, I don't remember seeing those adjusted rankings. Those would be interesting. I also don't revel too much in how we finish in the recruiting rankings. It's good to have 32 highly ranked recruits, and hopefully we can find a way to get them all on the team, but more importantly is the fact that I think we really addressed areas where we need talent and depth. For us I think the DL and OL were the real problem areas and I think we did very well. A 5 Star WR is certainly a great get, but that wouldn't have meant much if we hadn't addressed our problem areas first. Of course this is the case every year so next year the emphasis will probably go to RB's and we will have to be strong in that area and that will be the key measure of that class.
You know Terry, I actually agree with Mr. Lichtenfels (whoever he is). I could care less about winning the national championship in recruiting. Notre Dame or Miami or Southern Cal or whoever can claim that. Like I said above Alabama got a bunch of highly ranked DL's and OL's from within Alabama. We also got some very good WR's and LB's. To recover from the NCAA sanctions we need quality and depth and I think this class gave a good deal of both.
More stats. 2007-2008 Teams with players in the Rivals top 250. TEXAS - 30 FLORIDA - 29 SOUTHERN CAL - 28 LSU - 26 NOTRE DAME - 25 MIAMI - 21 ALABAMA - 19 OKLAHOMA - 19 GEORGIA - 18 OHIO STATE - 18 MICHIGAN - 17
Bill, MCG....has there ever been any resolution of wheter or not Greg Mattison will be returning next year to the Gators? I see that you signed Dan McCarney as a defensive coach, but the article didn't mention anything about him taking over for Mattison. But he is known as a DL coach, just like Mattison.
