No, this is not about Urban Meyer. It's about Rich Rodriguez at Michigan poaching recruits from Purdue and Penn State. I would not expect Joe Tiller to be inviting Rodriguez over for dinner anytime soon. He's obviously angry about it. No comment in this article from Joe Paterno. Here is the article:
I wonder if some Michigan fans are worried just what they got themselves into when they got Rodriguez. First the buyout problems and now this. He sounds like a real sweat heart doesn't he
College football recruiting is among the slimiest activities in "amateur" sports. It attracts some real characters.
I'd like to see some changes, mainly in an early signing period with a out for the kid if the head coach is fired or leaves. While it won't cure all the problems, it would let you know what you have for sure, the ones that hurt the most are kids who you need and they verbal early and you stop recruiting that position and they leave you late in the game so that your 2nd or 3rd kids are already gone.
The Gators lost two this year, one to Michigan and one to Miami. To be fair the one to Miami was a kid that committed to them first then changed to us about three weeks ago before changing back yesterday. I am not against an early signing date. However I do have to say this, that as long as the system is the way it is then players have the right to change their mind right up to the last day. As long as that is the way it is then if I was a coach I would recruit right up to the last minute. It's legal and we have to say that's the way the NCAA intends things to be or they would change the rules. I think Terry has a good idea, but until then you need to understand that things can change on the last day. Just my humble opinion.
Early signing works for basketball and prevents this kind of stuff...at least if a kid is jerking you around you find out about it before it's too late to get anybody to play WR for you except the tuba player.
Which is why I'd like to see it in August before fall camp starts in college football. In the past that would have been way too early, but both ND and Texas had something like 18 commits by then. It would be nice to know at that point who is really committed and who isn't. Then you can adjust your fall recruiting as appropriate. Rob Ianello, ND Asst, is an officer in whatever national assistants organization there is, and he said yesterday that there is movement towards an early signing period. The assistants are solidly behind it according to him.
