Pretty interesting read.... and of course I'm pleased the 2008 Gators are ranked very highly at #2. http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/24198508/college-football-national-champions-20-years-ranked That was the good ole days when even Alabama fans had to sit up and take notice if they were playing Florida. Hey.... that UF team as a matter of fact is ranked higher than any of the last 5 Bama NC squads. Imagine that! Kp.... I'm sure you agree with this ranking.... LOL..
I posted that in another topic. Texas 2005 and UF 2008 seperate themselves by the guy who played QB. A couple of sure fire College HOF guys, 2 of the greatest of their era, but sadly failures as Pro's. Bama is well represented in the top 10, I think what keeps Bama from having a rating like Texas or UF is the lack of a once in a generation guy at QB like VY and Tebow. Otherwise all those Bama squads were just loaded at every other position.
Hell, y'all I've been too busy celebrating our NC's (5 of them to be exact) to worry about this kind of stuff. So out of the last 20 Alabama has 25%. I think that's pretty great. 8)
KP of course right now Alabama is the king of college football. Back when Tebow played for UF and Meyer coached.... nah... they weren't. But they ascended to the throne shortly thereafter and don't seem ready to abdicate any time soon. Can you imagine if Tebow had gone to Bama instead of Florida like he almost did? That would be 7 or 8 national titles for Saban in the last 12 years.
MCG, Alabama had a different style of team than Florida. Tebow was perfect for Florida. It would have been interesting to.have seen him at Alabama though.
Dave who won the National Championship in Tebows senior year (2009)? Please ,enjoy the fact that the ESPN staff thinks you had the 2nd greatest NC team in the last 20 years and let it go.
KP my thereafter reference began in 2009.... after the 2006 and 2008 Gators won the NC and beginning in reality when the Tide upended Tebow and the Gators in 2009 Atlanta. That was the last time Florida was competitive with the Tide in a relevant game.
Dave, I get it but Tebow and Meyer were still there in 2009. Meyer got sick right after that didn't he? 8)
Yeah our program is at a crossroads of sorts right now. We could be headed down the path of a Notre Dame,Michigan, Miami, Nebraska or a Tenn...... on the road to perpetual irrelevancy after being very relevant for many years. The gap between Spurrier and Meyer was short compared to this 9 year relevancy drought since the 2009 season. ( I don't count the 2 SECCG appearances.... smoked by Bama in those ). It's critical for Mullen to get off to a good start and continue to recruit top talent to the program. The next two years could determine the fate of program for the next twenty years. We will see......
Interesting article. Of course I like the 2008 Gators ranked that high. But along the line of KP's remark, 25% of the last 20 Championships kind of makes clear what team is best overall.
Until SCOFRO gets rolling, I'm content to be a homegrown fan of the #1 and # 2 rated teams of all time. Thank you, that is all. Choo choo......
AJ, I have a theory that there is a reason that over the years there is a reason that there are relatively few teams that reappear at the top over and over again. I don't know what that reason is but it seems to hold true. If it is true, then Nebraska will be back. Maybe not this year but the light at the other end of the tunnel could be the "train"
kp what's your favorite Alabama NC? I'd bet it's that Jay Barker groups since you don't like the pass!
Terry, the 1992 win was most satisfying because of Miami's attitude before the game. The 1979 win over Penn State was another because it was such an epic defensive game. The 2012 was also a favorite because we beat Notre Dame convincingly. All of them that I can remember were a lot of fun.
Terry, its not that I don't like the pass but more that Alabama usually has a stable of great running backs and an adequate passing qb. The timing of the passes is usually my complaint. We march down the field, running the ball, then throw 3 passes (incomplete or for short yardage) and the drive stalls. WHY???. Or we open the game with 3 runs and are stopped so we pass for 8 of the next 10 plays and we wonder why we fall behind early in games. I think for Alabama at least, running the ball a lot in the first half pays dividends late in the game. Someone once said 3 things can happen when you pass the ball and 2 of those things are bad.
Personally I love the passing game. The most fun I ever had in football was the fun and gun under Steve Spurrier.
