My dad used to throw things at the TV when he went into that damned four corner stall. I remember one game where the halftime score was 4-2. I will always remember him as the father of the shot clock.
Great coach. I remember hearing one of the announcers say last year sometime that he was suffering from dementia and of course was not the same man we all remember. Darrell Royal was the same in his last year. RIP. Coach you were a difference maker.
Dean Smith was one of the great coaches in an era of college basketball. He certainly belongs in a small family of great ones!
Tark was quite a character and in the middle of more than 1 controversy over his methods. I think of those UNLV teams that were so good as the peak of his career. The bottom was the ill fated hire by the Spurs, fortunately they fired him quickly and the guy who hired him moved to the bench and is still there, turned out to be a pretty good move.
Just thought I'd mention the passing of another sports hall of famer whose death was overlooked with the passing of Dean Smith. Billy Casper died last weekend. He won 51 PGA events and stands 7th all time. He won 3 majors and is in the Golf Hall of Fame.
Billy is pretty much a forgotten man in the PGA Tour history. They replayed an episode of Ferrity the other night on Golf Channel, he really had quite a career. I know that you know, but he was at one time a student at Notre Dame, not for long though.
He spent a semester at ND then returned to San Diego. My 8-year old grandson noticed something common to the three most recent passings in the sports world (Banks, Smith, Casper). He asked his dad why famous sports people die when they are 83 years old. From the mouths of babes.......
