Recently purchased a Traeger pellet grill and OH MY!!! I have become Da Boss around the house as my bride has cooked two times since we bought it three weeks ago. I was torn at buying this or the Green Egg and let's just say I have no complaints with the purchase... I have cooked the most mouth watering chicken, pork, JalapeƱo poppers, Meatloafs, steaks and tonight made zero fat Venison burgers (Thank you Bambi)....Veggies are the boss on this as well as we are eating healthier while saving money and calories... Highly recommend..And it's so.......Easy..
The fire is started with electricity as well, turn it on smoke to warm up and start the fire, then chose what temp or smoke you want. It's pretty much a convection oven/smoker. Think rabbit pellets for the wood with choices of hickory, Apple, cherry, oak and more... Normal run is kick it on smoke for an hour, then 350 for 45-60 minutes and enjoy the smoke ring and smiles....I plan on cooking a brisket this weekend and doing a turkey on thanksgiving... Evidently folks use these for cooking contest and people have got angry saying its unfair as its too easy..I'll take that as life is short... No flare ups and you never open the lid until it's done...
Yeah I did a couple T-bones the other day and burgers tonight. It goes up to 450 degrees so not a problem. The only difference is its always indirect heat, no flare ups....
Terry if you are looking for sear marks on the steaks from the flames this is not the grill for you. The only negative I have read on these pellet grills is from steak connoisseurs who really like a little char on their steaks along with the grill marks. This will provide the grill marks as you run at 450 degrees when cooking steaks but it will not be like a charcoal grill.... Personally I am into moist flavored meats with a smokey flavor and since this is so damn easy I have fallen for it...I don't have steaks that often (Remember I farm for a living ) so its a variety of fish, chicken, pork, veggies and other items...
Making brisket for my first time tonight for my father as tomorrow is Father's Day (8-12 hrs cooking time ) and he's having a rough time at 83 years old, now that my mother does not recognize him any longer. My Dad has always been my hero in life and he confided in me that he at times no longer wants to go on with the current circumstances. So with that said every moment is a blessing as each individual moment is very important... Happy Fathers to to all and to your families, may they be blessed...
God bless you Ralph for, 1) openly avowing your love and respect for your father, and 2) still having him in your life. I'm sorry about your mother. Alzheimer's/Dementia is cruel to loved ones.
Thank you Sid, you are more than kind, you are a friend and appreciated... Yes my hero is having a rough time at the moment and I do not have an answer no matter how hard I try to...I can only love on him and be there when he needs me...He is so sharp and much more than I ever will be, he drives me crazy at times but brings me joy in the same instant...He battles depression, something totally foreign to me... Getting older is no cake walk and in my limited observation the most difficult time in life.. I am a very simple man rooted in my early biblical training... Honor your Father and Mother Do not commit adultery Do not covet your neighbors wife (Or boat, buggy, cars, trucks, land etc..) Do not take the Lords name in vain Do not steal And do not have any other Gods but Jehovah... For those who don't believe I wish you did but no judgement from me just a wish of peace in your life...
Whew... I don't see coveting a big screen TV or ostrich boots on that list so guess I can hold off on purchasing asbestos-lined pajamas for a little while....
I'm thinking the ostrich boots are a positive, they were originally my boots and I received numerous compliments and my son visited the other day and commented no matter the race of the individual kind comments were made while visiting Ireland... At this point if I'm an ostrich I'm sorry but you may soon become a boot...Buy ostrich, it's a good investment no matter who is judging...
LOL, I'm sorry Bob, the big screen is a given...Especially if hand signals control the thing...If that fails you are a sinner and need repentance...
My brother in law is looking at a Traeger Grill, they are pricy that's for sure and you have a lot of models. I guess I wonder though about the availability of the pellets. It's not like you can pop in to the local HEB or Kroger and get them, at least I don't think you can. How many times have I been to a BBQ where the host forgot to get a new cannister of gas for his grill, at least those are pretty easy to get though. Not as easy as charcoal though.
You can get the pellets from Amazon... and with Prime (which I have) I'll have them in 2 days, unless I pay $5 and get them tomorrow... And living in DFW, I have the option of same day delivery on most items. Sometimes they give it to us for FREE. I'm one of those guys who believes in buying your next bag, and soon as you open your last bag. Tough to run out that way.
In our area the local Ace Hardware stores carry the full line of wood pellets, I picked up 60 lbs on Saturday and as luck would have it was on sale at $16 per 20 lb bag. I realize I'm more rural than most but the feed stores carry pellets as well. I made an 8 lb brisket on Saturday night Sunday morning (11 hrs) for Father's Day, my first and the reviews were outstanding...I used hickory and pecan pellets for the job...Word to the wise, I cooked under the overhang of my roof next to my pool to evade the rain showers and all the smoke went straight up into my vented overhang saturating my attic (if you can call it that). The results is our house now smells like a BBQ joint including every linen and all the clothes hanging in the closet...Yeah momma was very impressed with my analytical abilities... LOL... But we ate good...
LOL, I hear you Scott, my wife just texted me to say we are most definitely having leftovers tonight...
