  Michigan State head coach John L. Smith got what he deserved yesterday, then disgraced himself in front of the media. After losing to hapless Illinois, the Illini players attempted to plant their flag in the Spartan turf, as this is what Mr. Smith encourages his own players to do. A near brawl ensued at mid-field after the game and its lucky nobody got killed. In his post-game presser, Smith laughed off the dangerous incident and again attacked Charlie Weis, slapping himself as hard as he could and saying "You see? I got hit too?" He's been calling Mr. Weis a liar since last summer and spoiling for a fight. When the fight came from Illinois, he seemed completely undone mentally. Its just my opinion, but this guy is going to get someone killed. Its already an emotional and violent sport. The coach doesn't have to add anything to it or cheerlead the post-game nonsense. How in thee hell do clowns like this get these jobs? You wouldn't want this fool to run your local Little League snack bar and here he is in the Big Ten. I just hope he gets fired before someone is seriously hurt. If there were too many guys like him running the top jobs, there wouldn't be any college football. They'd have to go to minor professional leagues like baseball. John L. Smith needs to go... Smith's post-game comments may add more heat after loss to Illini Sunday, October 01, 2006 By Steve Grinczel EAST LANSING -- If a Michigan State coach ever needed to beat Michigan, it's John L. Smith next Saturday in Ann Arbor. Smith's Spartan football team dealt a debilitating blow to the Spartan Nation's psyche for the second consecutive week by losing to lowly Illinois, 23-20, on a 39-yard field goal by Jason Reda with six seconds remaining Saturday afternoon in Spartan Stadium. Michigan State was so listless and unmotivated, it was outplayed in every aspect by a team it beat 61-14 a year ago. The Illini had lost its last 10 Big Ten games, and 24 of 25 dating back to 2003. Seven days earlier, MSU (3-2, 0-1 Big Ten) caused emotional support for Smith to plummet by blowing a 16-point lead against No. 12-ranked Notre Dame in the final 8:18. How Michigan State could play so ineptly in its conference opener against the Fighting Illini (2-3, 1-1), who started a true freshman quarterback, was a mystery even to Smith. Afterward, Smith said the Spartans were flat all week in practice in the aftermath of the collapse against the Fighting Irish. "That's the way we practiced -- what you saw," said Smith. "Can't get 'em to go. And apparently I don't have the answer. Can't get 'em to go hard in practice, so we've got to continue to look for the answer." Michigan State's record under Smith, who is in the fourth year of a six-year contract, dropped to 1-12 when trailing at halftime and 1-15 when tied or behind after three quarters. "We have to look at ourselves and say that it was our fault as coaches, we didn't get our kids prepared to play the game," Smith said. "And if you go out unprepared emotionally and mentally, you're going to lose and you deserve to lose."
That flag planting crap, along with stomping on the other team's logo, is so third grade. Not that we never did it...I had real issues with how some of the players behaved under Cooper.
Smith.. <t>Is a moron and they cannot lose enough games for me. I'm guessing they pull the plug on him and go get the Rutgers guy.</t>
Drew Stanton entered the season as a probable 1st round draft choice...but I would imagine his stock is dropping fast.
