Got this from another site... I am about to plan a little trip with my family to Mexico, and I would like to ask you to assist me. We are going to walk across the border from the US into Mexico, and I need to make a few arrangements. I believe you can help with this. Plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws. I'm sure they handle those things the same way you do here. So , would you mind telling your buddy, El Presidente Vincente Fox, that Im on my way over? Please let him know that I will be expecting the following: 1. Free medical care for my entire family. 2. English speaking government bureaucrats for all service I might need, whether I use them or not. 3. All government forms need to be printed in English. 4. I want my kids to be taught by English speaking teachers. 5. Schools need to include classes on American culture and history. 6. I want my kids to see the American flag flying on the top of the pole at their school with the Mexican flag beneath. 7. Please plan to feed my kids at school for both breakfast and lunch. 8. I will need a local Mexican drivers license so I can get easy access to government services. 9. I do not plan to have any car insurance and I won't make any effort to learn local traffic laws. 10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from Pres Fox to leave me alone, please provide an interpreter in all stations. 11. I plan to fly the US Flag from my housetop, put flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th with a massive parade sanctioned by local authorities. 12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes and don't enforce any labor or tax laws. 13. Please tell all the people to be extremely nice and never say a critical word about me, or the strain I might place on the economy. 14. I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for the people who come to the US from Mexico. I am sure that Pres. Fox won't mind returning the favor , if you ask him nicely. 15. However, if he gives you any trouble, just invite him to go quail hunting with your VP. Thanks you so Much for your timely help. That's pretty funny. Here's one thing I don't understand though about those people who don't think it's a problem or think that we should make them all instant citizens. When I ask them why should we have such a terrible control of the border and what is wrong with sending them back if they are caught. I usually get the motto on the Statue of Liberty thrown at me, you know "Give me your tired, you poor, etc. But that was the 19th century, things are different now, we should have control of our borders and we should have only the immigrants who qualify and have complied with the law. I understand we can't round up 12-15 million illegals and send them home. But I would like to stop the illegal immigration and to deal with the ones that are here already humanely. I would also like to change the law that makes anybody who is born on American Soil a US Citizen. I think that was put in after the Civil War to make the Slaves citizens automatically, but again that was the 19th century. We don't need that law anymore, it should be changed. Terry
So which is it this week? Is Bush being ridiculed for being to easy or too hard on immigration. I lost my score card a while back. Bush did not put into action all of the government policies of which illegals take advantage. Those are Democratic Welfare type concerns. Now that the government is proposing tightening down on this issue, we are making fun of Bush allowing it? I’m confused. :?
There are a couple of additional details you need to know: if traveling to Mexico leave your wallet in the US and put $50 in your sock to bribe the poilicia when they arrest you.
Lord knows I don't claim to have the solution to this complicated problem, but here is George Will's column on it...I think he puts a lot of the complicating factors into perspective and makes a lot of sense to me. George Will Column stu
8) open note for George.......I bet I can get a well educated conservative"pundit" from India for about 1/4 of what you're paid...if the shoe fits George go with it! Now trying to replace Pat might be harder this is where you guys can insert the ....ahem...German jokes!
Good article Stu, About 90 % of my practice is 1st or 2nd generation immigrants legal and illegal. While the majority are Poles, I do have small groups of Greeks, Philipinos, Portugese, Thai, Indian, Croatian, Slavs as well as sprinkling of Italian, Irish, Cuban, German, Hungarian, various Hispanic and even a couple Chinese. What distinguishes them from say the poor Mexican is that they are educated and come from solid families. Many have professional backgrounds only to work in the factories and in construction. The common denominator is education. They are not coming from poor villages which are infested with crime. They work their tails off saving money to buy a house and to send their children to college. These people are highly ambitious, often working 2 jobs, more so than the typical American, appreciate the opportunities this country has to offer and they respect our laws. Most learn the language quickly and go to English school at night. These folks are proud to be Americans and proud of their heritage. After all these years, I’m still amazed to see factory workers on modest income with their 2 family homes showing me 1099’s for 5-6K interest income. You can't categorize all illegal/legal immigrants in one melting pot, and not distinguish their social/educational backgrounds. To do so, is to overlook their solid contributions to American society. Our country thrives on cultural diversity and if we are to stay ahead of the rest of the world , we need the best that every country can offer.
