Terry brought up the question about other college sports having a pre-season but not football. While I don't think you'll ever see it in the true sense due to injury and monetary concerns, one of my Aggie friends had a decent idea. What would you guys think about the NCAA allowing spring games to be converted over to "real" games with another school? They wouldn't count for anything, but otherwise could be staged as a regular game. Of course thanks to money again, you'd only see "buy" type games against directional schools, but to me that's better than the intersquad games we get now. Also, it would help coaches get a better idea of what they've really got, and be better able to plan for the following season. I know it would have helped the Aggies immensely to realize they couldn't pull off the offense we started the season with. I can guaranty the team we have now would have rolled Arkansas St rather than stumble to the loss we ended up with... Thoughts?
I think one or two controlled 'scrimmages' could be a cool thing. We didn't have them when I played in CA, but they have one now. Here in the South, the high schools have these things called football jamborees which are pretty dang cool. Basically, 3 teams meet at a neutral place or an agreed upon field. -Teams 1 and 2 play a half. -Then teams 1 and 3 play a half -Then teams 2 and 3 play a half. 3 teams essentially play 4 quarters worth a football.. They are big community events and are used by the coaches to see what is and isn't working.. also to get some new kids a set of wet feet to build upon.
