I've seen that video of the UM/Illinois incident already... And it seemed to me that the Illinois guy isn't completely innocent. Not saying he deserved to get punched in the nuts, but he purposely walked into him after he recovered the fumble. I initially thought he just wasn't paying attention, but close to the end of the video, you see him get up with the ball and then glance down at Ortmann and walk right up to him and stand over him. Both guys were jerks/punks.
As far as the Brandon Spikes incident. He should have been ejected from the game and he should be suspended for at least the next game. He could have seriously and permanently injured that players eyes. Disgusting. Hopefully the SEC Commish will take action and suspend Spikes if Meyer doesn't do it himself. What Spikes did was worse than the punch in the nuts by the UM player Sat. He needs to be suspended.
The Spikes stunt reminded alot of a punk move one of our kids pulled back in 02 at Wisky, where he choked the Wisky QB.....JT suspended the kid for the next 2 games. I do suspect the conference office would have gotten involved if JT had not taken action.....we'll see what action RR and Urbie take, if any......
B10, to it's credit, has already suspended 2 players this year for this type of conduct. SEC commish needs to step up to the plate, maybe give Meyer till 5PM today to take action, he's certainly had time to see the video. If UF/Meyer don't take action then he should do so tomorrow AM. edit: BTW I remember the Wisc incident. Wasn't the deal that the OSU kid could not play again till the Wisconsin kid recovered and cleared to play again? Also he publically apologized for the incident.
Hopefully the right thing will be done first by Meyer and backed up by the SEC. 1 game suspension, fortuneately for the Gators next up is Vandy so it won't be a cripling loss but still he should not dress for that game.
Good memory.....JT discussed the punishment with Alvarez and got his blessing which included a public apology to Sorgi, Alvarez and his Badgers.....
Just as I was disgusted by Albert Haynesworth's display as a player in the NFL and spoke up against him, I will also join in the disgust for Spikes. There is no place in this sport for such actions.
So I guess retaliation is justification. Very sorry to see that Meyer didn't give him the 1 game suspension, and I hope the SEC steps in and makes things right.
UF's defense gave up 8 total points vs. LSU and MSU without Spikes. I vote for a one game suspension vs. FIU....
The player from Georgia was interviewed after the game and said nothing about the incident. I love it when keyboard jockey's can label a player a Punk when they know nothing about what went on the field, what happened before or even bigger don't know squat about the player involved. The SEC office has accepted the punishment. I don't approve of what he did but think with everything that was going on down on the field that day that it's punishment enough. So big deal that some of you don't think it's enough. I've seen worse not dealt with at all and there was no harm. By the way did any of you that criticized Meyer's actions read anything he said when he announced the action he had taken?
Bill, I'm glad you don't support what Spikes did, I doubt you would have supported the punches that were thrown by the B10 players who were suspended for 1 game. But the punches that were thrown had no chance of permanently damaging those players like Spikes going for a players eyes. I'm disappointed that he's not suspended for 1 game, and especially disappointed that there was an attempt to justify retaliation by gouging another players eyes. Terry
A punk move is a punk move.....I'm not labelling Spikes a punk. He may well be a fine young man, but that was still a punk move, independent of what may have happened on the field.
....couldn't disagree more Bill. There is plenty of harm done when inappropriate behaviors don't face consequences significant enough to change those behaviors. Those behaviors then perpetuate and in some elements of society, sadly then become accepted .....
