Today at the Honda was great drama. The Tiger roared and the young kid from Northern Ireland refused to flinch. Lost in all the hoopla and hype was the story of a 43 year old journeyman golfer named Tom Gillis who found himself playing in the final group with McIlroy. Here was a guy that not only never won but couldn't make the top 100 in the Nationwide Tour. He could have crumbled like the other member of the final group, Harris English who shot a 77....but he didn't. There he was on 18 rolling in a birdie putt to tie Woods and finish second. In 21 years on the tour he'd never finished higher than third. Nice story.
I agree Gip, very enjoyable tournament to watch. Tiger had a great final day and Mcllroy has a lot of poise for a youngster. Oh to be 22 yrs old again?
It's been a great start for sure. Maybe Tiger will make it back after all. That iron shot to inside 10 feet on 18 was vintage Tiger. At 22 McIlroy seems mature and poised for a great year. On another front I fell victim to advertising hype and ordered a new Rocketballz driver....just too cool a name to not give it a try!!
Justin Rose the most boring golfer out there IMHO. I was really pulling for Bubba Watson, now there is a guy who plays with some panache! That shot from the rough on #18, pure Bubba. I loved that hole where he told the crowd they might want to move as he was coming right over them with a big ole sweeping hook. Tiger....what can you say, just when you thought he was on the track doesn't play well and withdraws. I thought it was interesting that with his leg (achilles) injury he got in the drivers seat and drove his Mercedes out of the parking lot. He did not go to the trainers tent or let anybody look at him. He quit right after he absolutely chunked a short shot into a trap. I'm not saying he's making it up...but when things were going well for him he'd have never quit becasue his achilles was tightening up.
