While South East Texas is dealing with flooding, I'm still ok, the Hill Country is doing quite well. In fact Ralphs competitors, Texas Peaches, are reportedly the best in years.

SAN ANTONIO - The conditions this year have been near perfect for abundant Hill Country peach crops.

There's been some cold, but not too cold or too late in the season. Rain, but spread out over time. Cool mornings and some cloudy days for picking when it's not so hot the fruit gets mushy before hitting the stand. Hail that pummeled nearby areas also managed to steer clear of the orchards.

The San Antonio Hill Country has become known for its peaches as well as berries and, increasingly, wine grapes, though production is relatively small compared to what comes out of California, South Carolina and Georgia.

Texas, in fact, ranks 10th in peach production, with about 40 percent of the fruit coming out of the Hill Country. Other groves are clustered in East Texas (Smith and surrounding counties) and central northwest Texas (Montague and surrounding counties).

But growers and fans alike are convinced the Hill Country's elevation and soils, rich with mineral deposits left by an ancient sea, and lower average precipitation compared with East Coast growing areas make for a more flavorful peach. Peaches are a key part of the region's summer tourism.
