Back in November, Cindy and I checked with AJ to find out what would be appropriate to send to a soldier in Afghanistan. We had found a post from one of our soldiers on a Tennessee board and wanted to send something "from home." We made up a package for him that contained enough "goodies" for his whole platoon.

We picked up our stopped mail from the post office today We opened a package to find something that brought tears to the eyes of both of us. In that package was an American flag with this document.

That made my day. That made my year. After that I can't remember if Tennessee lost any games this year or not.

Congratulations to both of you. We received a similar certificate from the USAF for our support of our son and Operation Enduring Freedom when he was posted over there. It hangs over my desk at the office.

Everything we can do for those folks is appreciated.

That is very moving. Congratulations to you both and to George for your unselfish actions and for your unexpected reward.

Very impressive. When you say you packed enough for his platoon, what do you mean? What did you send. I'd like to do something like that.

AJ gave us a list that included:

Beef Jerky - 6 large bags
Sunflower Seads - 6 large bags
toiletry items like razors, dental floss, clean wipes
Anything from home - we knew this was a Tennessee guy so we sent DVD's of all the games this year as well as two Tennessee stocking caps and a power T magnet
I know I am forgetting a few things but that is what I can remember without the list. The whole package weighed almost 35 pounds.

Just read your post Tom. My closest friend's son who is a ranger at Fr. Drum will be pulling out this Fri. for his first overseas assignment. He's been assigned to Camp Alamo.
    Thanks for the "goodie" suggestions.

    Mike,

AJ gave us the suggestions so we can't take credit for knowing what to send.

As people of the United States, we all benefit from the service that these young men perform every day. Something like these care packages show them that we are proud of them and cherish their sacrifices.

I left off a few items from the list that I gave Terry:

    Chap stick
    Playing cards
    News paper from the states
    Postage stamps
Anything that is non-perishable and reminds them of the home that they want to return to soon.

AJ, if there is anything I forgot here, please chime in.

I just purchased a case to display the flag and the certificate. Our rock fireplace just found a new item to proudly display.

    That is absolutely fantastic.

It's wonderful what you and Cindy did and that is something you can treasure the rest of your life.

    Bravo.
