Bowl bans hurt, but TV is where they could have killed them. Drop them off TV for a season and they are in a HUGE hole...
Giving approval for Old Miss players to transfer without having to sit out a year will also hurt. Watched the Egg Bowl and stunned at the abundance of quality players on that undisciplined and poorly coached team. Suspect there are more then a few teams out there looking to upgrade their talent level that will start forming a raiding party in Oxford.
I'm guessing that the punishment does not include withholding a portion of the school's income from the SEC network. The program may drop off from its current mediocre level, but, net of whatever fines the NCAA imposes, the overall income will continue to flow in.
It would Corey, and that's why they don't impose that punishment anymore.... I was just thinking out loud on the TV stuff.
A major issue is if he can transfer without having to sit out a year. The bowl ban is extended to the 2018 season. Per NCAA rules, players who are prevented from ever playing again in a bowl game because of sanctions can immediately transfer. So, a Mississippi player in his final year of eligibility in 2018 can transfer without having to sit out a year. Those who would still be underclassmen in 2018, which Patterson will be, would have to sit out a year. If Patterson could come over next year, he likely would start. If he has to sit out a year, he probably would have a better chance to start at another program as Peters and McCaffery should be pretty established by 2019. I've read that several Mississippi underclassmen have retained attys to challenge this rule.
I was wondering about how that would impact the kid if Ole Miss challenges the ruling? Not that I want you guys to be any better when we face off next year, but in all fairness to the kid, they should let him go. Ole Miss is guilty as all hell here. I'm still surprised that they didn't slap Freeze with a Show Cause.
He seems pretty confident that he will not have to sit out a year and will be able to play in 2018 via an NCAA waiver. From the limited amount I have seen him play, he has an NFL arm and is very mobile. We are now well stocked at QB. Our offensive line not as much....
Shea Patterson was the #1 dual threat QB in his class, by a big margin. Huge pickup for Michigan. Officially only the Sr's from Ole Miss get to play right away, but I'm sure they will apply based on his coach being fired and Ole Miss being hit with sanctions and stuff like that. One thing about being loaded at QB, somebody is leaving because they don't want to sit and wait. At least that usually how it works. Speight has already announced he's leaving, and you have to wonder if both your 2018 verbals will sign now that Shea is on the roster. Also Shea Patterson's brother was hired by Hugh Freeze and then Shea decided to go to Ole Miss. Will his brother be working in Ann Arbor?
Corey... he should probably get one, but I doubt anyone is touching Hugh with a 39 foot pole for a while. It's not like he proved he could win without dirty talent...
Ole Miss has flipped Matt Corral.... the 5 star Qb from Ca. who was committed to UF. Haven't had much good news on the Gator recruiting front since Mullen took over.....
Didn't Mullin sort of push him out the door as he doesn't fit the Mullen offense. Doing him a favor really if he isn't going to play and Mullen will be recruiting over him as soon as possible. I'm sure Mullen has made contact with Fields as he'd be a perfect fit for what Mullen wants in a QB.
It's possible this failure to secure Corral was really an extra push to get Fields... who supposedly had UF in his final 2 or 3 choices before choosing Georgia. With Corral out the door is wide open for Fields.... who no doubt has already heard plenty about that from Gator coaches.
