Currently, a series of automatic, across-the-board cuts to government agencies, totaling $1.2 trillion over 10 years (referred to sequestration) are scheduled to go into effect on March 1st. Should sequestration go into effect on March 1st, employees who are scheduled to work on March 1st should report for work as usual. Under sequestration, agencies would still have funds available after March 1, but the overall funding for the remainder of the fiscal year may be reduced.
Every time there's a big snowstorm in DC they tell "non-essential" workers to stay home. That would be a perfect place to start layoffs.
