The cover story on this weeks issue of Sports Illustrated is on the Ohio State Athletic Dept. It is the largest Athletic Dept in the NCAA. It's pretty interesting. I don't know where they got the numbers, but they put up numbers for revenue in Football/Basketball/Overall. Ohio State was the leader in overall revenue and Notre Dame was the leader in Football Revenue. What was really amazing to me is that OSU had 104M in revenue and about 60 million was from football, that means 40m came from other sports, and they weren't in the top 5 in basketball revenue so less than 10 M could have come from there. I'm surprised that any school would generate 30M from non football/non basketball sports. Also I do have a question for you Ohio guys. In Texas no state funds can be spent for athletic faciiites, our current projects to expand the stadium is paid for 100% from donations. Is that true in Ohio as well? It was a pretty good article if you haven't had a chance to read it. It's not available online.
I hear they charge $40 admission to womens basketball and $25 for a bleacher seat at home baseball games. I won't be able to read the article. My decades-long boycott continues........
Women's basketball, mens baseball and hockey would be the only other sports that would generate much income. To my knowledge no state funds are utilized for athletic facilities. Someone else may have more knowledge. Don
Wow, 40Mil from "other"?? There aren't many schools that run in the black on their baseball programs (Luckily A&M does). I'm not saying OSU isn't making money on baseball, but even the most elite only make a slight amount above cost . Basketball is a huge cash cow if you are a regular tournament team. I wonder if any donations are accounted in that 100+ million of revenue??
TOK, I'm always hesitant to do any numbers comparison between athetic departments at different schools.....far too many different ways to account for things or not as the case may be.....as far as I'm concerned we're just a modest, underprivileged public land-grant school with a few loyal fans struggling to do our best in the face of overwhelming odds.
Hold on there Buckeye! That's our motto plagarized word for word. I think I smell a lawsuit coming!
Scott, I think it's just a simple case of great minds from modest, underprivileged public land-grant schools with a few loyal fans struggling to do their best in the face of overwhelming odds thinking alike....!
Now that you mention it... I think you are probably right. You Buckeyes are not nearly as bad as all those SEC guys make you out to be...
