    THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State starting cornerback Donald Washington and reserve corner Eugene Clifford have been suspended for the national championship game because of a violation of team rules, a source close to the team confirmed last night.

There were no details on the nature of the violation, except that it is not a legal issue.

The loss of Washington is significant. The sophomore from Indianapolis has started every game this season and played well, twice being named the team's defensive player of the week.

He has 34 tackles, a sack and an interception returned 70 yards for a touchdown against Kent State.

In November, while discussing who has stood out on defense, center Jim Cordle called Washington "the most underrated corner in the nation."

...not good at all TOK. If there is any silver lining, its that the DB's are where we have the greatest depth. You still hate to lose the experienced A team guys....somewhere along the line this will come back to bite us in the a$$.

Since breaking team rules can mean a multitude of sins, it could not have happed at a worse time.

I really wonder if these young men really think about what they are doing at times? (Apparently not)

While we do have some depth at that position, experience certianly helps.Lets hope it does not cost us the game.

    Buckeye Terry,

The Dispatch issued an early report this morning that Corner Washington may be appealing the suspension. Coach Tressel nor the university were talking. Gene Smith had no comment.

The team has left for Christmas break. Looks like no one knows for certain what is really happening.

    Don,

the official press release from the athletic department announced that suspension of Clifford - a frosh reserve CB and made no mention of Washington.

In any event, it looks like the "unnamed sources" who "confirmed" the earlier suspensions before may have been a little off in their reporting....there are many rumors floating about regarding a fight, etc .
The kids have gone home for xmas break and won't return to campus until the 26th. Hopefully they'll all behave themselves and there won't be any more "news".
