and by could be.. I mean, even going on what appears to be undisputed at this point in the article... heads will roll in this athletic dept. http://www.press-citizen.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080719/NEWS01/807190322/1079
Corey, That might be an under statement! If the family can prove what the mother is stating, it will be a free for all. Don
Some of the reactions from local readers below the article may indicate how something like this could occur in the first place. A couple of them blame the girl, describing her like fresh fish being fed to your pet shark. Sickening.
Sounds like things got a little rough...... ....no...just kidding...sorry for the sick humor... But in any event I abhor these kinds of crimes vs. women as all men should. However....I have to say caution should be exercised and no rush to judgement should be made. Girls get drunk...and hang out in hotel rooms and dorm rooms until all hours and things happen. The question is how much is consensual and how much is not? This is a fine line as in the Duke lacrosse case that gets blurred and when it comes to criminal prosecution there is no room for blurriness. My reference above to Dupay however leaves very little doubt that Dupay is guilty of a major crime because the girl had injuries. There is no defense for that.
whoa whoa whoa <t>no one is more 'careful' about tossing about guilty verdicts before all the facts are in. going back to the old *P days, I have re-told the story many times of my friends whose life was totally destroyed by a false rape charge. He eventually had to move away and start over. It still haunts him. It still costs him opportunities to this days almost 20 years after he was found innocent!!

That being said, what I find most disturbing here is that the system doesn't seem to have any protections for the female/victim here. Its protecting the players by design, but the student/victim is left to face daily confrontation and verbal abuse from the alleged attackers friends. The university appears to have turned a deaf ear on the entire situation until it was virtually proven that an attack happened.

In what society, when we're talking sex crimes here... are the attacker's friends allowed to move back into the alleged crime scene and clean up before the police get there?

If anything, we should be reading letters from the mother complaining that she feels ostracized by the community...because the UofI admin should have made sure that anyone involved goes nowhere near that woman.. No extra security or protective measures taken.. terrible, terrible administrative policy from the top down here.

Iowa should have taken control of this situation and been more pro-active and 'busy' rather than being busy covering up their tracks.</t>
There was a similar situation, maybe not quite as egregious, at one of the Kansas schools in a date rape case. For some reason the girl went to the kids coach who said he'd take care of it, whatever that means, and the guy had to run some laps. By the time she went to the proper authorities over this she looked dumb, stupid, etc. I can't remember the outcome, but I do wonder why victims of this sort of (alleged) crime even go to the school, coach, etc...it's a police matter. What do they expect the university or the coach do? Kick the kid out of school? That's about all they can do, and if you've been raped I wouldn't imagine that you'd be happy that all that happened to your rapist was that he got kicked out of school. Terry
