Not only has a WS Ring and 14 years MLB experience, but also has a Collegiate NC ring...in Football. WDYTJ? (What do you think JOCo?) GREAT CHOICE BY DR. TOM
Very cool! I remember him well. Had him on a few fantasy league teams. He was an outstanding MLB player. I'll be keeping an eye on the Husker baseball program in the future. Erstad Bio
Outstanding MLB player, didn't know he was the Husker Punter. Neb should benefit from moving to the B1G in baseball, they won't have to compete with the Baseball tough B12 South teams. B1G baseball is ok, but no where near as competitive as the B12. I wondered what happend to Neb baseball, was it your pitching coach leaving for Texas A&M?
:!: Darin Erstad is a great choice. He played here with the Angels and he was outstanding. He always played with discipline, intelligence and aggression and I believe that he will bring these qualities to his coaching. BTW- he was never shy about having been a Cornhusker football player. He was very proud of that. This looks like a super hire to me.
Doc!!....I've completed my counselling and therapy!! I'm not supposed to think about the B12 anymore!!
[quote He always played with discipline, intelligence and aggression and I believe that he will bring these qualities to his coaching. [/quote] I hope it can stick to the kids also JOCo...
BTW: Bubba Starling is projected as a top 10 pick in the MLB draft. I'd be shocked if he ever puts on Husker gear in either football or baseball.
Sounds like you got a good one and that the Huskers are ready to come into the Big 10 firing on all cylinders.
Bill, you shouldn't really say that IRT the BIG 10...I know you meant it towards Baseball, but the cylinders comment reminds the OSU fans of cars, which reminds them of Pryor's cars....well, you know what I mean....let's try to be as PC as we can during these turbulent times for our Buckeye fans. Thanks Bill.....
Starling #5 to Kansas City....be surprised if they took him without having a good feeling that they can sign him. Also on an unrelated note I see that the #1 overall draft choice, Gerrit Cole, was drafted in the 1st round by the Yankees but told them to pound sand...so now he'll be toiling in Pittsburgh. In retrospect maybe not such a good decision.
 This is why Irish fans didn't sweat when Bubba Starling opted for Nebraska. He's going to get so much up-front money from baseball, that football was never a realistic possibility. Did that kid from UCLA actually turn down the Yankees for the Pirates? How in hell did he ever qualify to get into UCLA? New York has more money to pay out in bonus/payroll than the Dodgers, Giants, A's and Padres combined. The Pirates only draft kids who will accept low ball offers. They got one from my old high school a few years back and Pittsburgh fans were furious. The difference between a Yankee offer and a Pirates offer might be as much as $10 million! Who's his agent? Daffy Duck?
Yup the kid was drafted out of HS by the Yankees and supposed wouldn't even listen to their offer, went to UCLA. Now he was the 28th pick then, so the money is different than being the #1 pick overall...but still.
In retrospect, it sounds like the kid made a good decision, going from the 28th pick three years ago to #1 today. He'll make a great deal more $ at #1 from the Pirates than he would have made at #28 from the Yankees. Years ago, a co-worker's kid was drafted in the 13th round out of HS. He turned it down and went to Clemson to pitch. He pitched well enough to help them get into the CWS final 8 as a senior. In his junior year, he was drafted in the 16th round. In his senior year he was drafted in an even later round. He never increased his velocity in college and ended up topping out at around 88 mph. I don't recall if he even signed. My point: It's a gamble either way. In the case of the UCLA kid, the gamble paid off in a big way.
