I didn't watch the Syracuse-Maryland game yesterday, but the stats show that Syracuse gained 370 yards on the ground and 589 total yards. Apparently, crucial turnovers gave Maryland the advantage. This will be a good test for our defense. The game will be at MetLife Stadium under the lights. On another subject, here is a nice article on freshman Drue Tranquill, who has become one of the next men up in the defensive secondary. http://www.jg.net/article/20140921/SPORTS0302/309219970/1008/SPORTS
So far I've liked what I have seen of Tranquill, did not know though that he was majoring in Engineering and taking 17 hours. That's a lot of academics for him, I hope he's up to it. Of course Miami QB Andrex Hendrix was up to a tough academic workload and grad early with a high GPA in Pre-Med. So it can be done, no doubt takes not only a smart kid but also a very organized kid in terms of Time management. Looking forward to the Syracuse game, hopefully there will be a big pro-Irish crowd and we get a big win.
ND <t>Drew Sharp jumps on board,<br/> <br/> He includes Notre Dame in his poll this week at number 23.<br/> <br/> ND is #8 in AP poll.</t>
Winston <t>ND is favored by 14 in this one.<br/> <br/> OT but...is it just me or did anyone else find the whole thing of J. Winston on the sideline of the FSU/Clemson game kind of screwy. First he shows up in full uniform and the coach sends him back but he comes back with a FSU jersey and he's is on the sideline the whole game even in some of the huddles near the team....I'm mean who's in charge there? Doesn't look like the coach is to me. This kid didn't learn anything from this one game suspension. We haven't heard the last of him either. He's a long way from anything close to a mature young man. <br/> <br/> He picked the right school I guess cause no one else would but up with his crap no matter how good he is on the field.</t>
There's clearly no leadership at that school. You make a great point. The kids are clearly running the show. The men are just cashing the checks and wearing the hats. Syracuse has given us problems in the past. As long as we're not playing in that horse **** basketball gym of theirs, I like our chances. And we've got Krebs there? Forget about it.
I live about one hour south of Met Life Stadium, formerly the Meadowlands. This should be a huge Irish "home" game. I will try to make sure that everything is " in order ". 8)
This week in 1964 the Era of Ara started with a win at Wisconsin. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Pvpf3ORU8Ps" frameborder="0"></iframe>
Oh and if you watch that video, you'll note that Ara with 18 secs left on the clock in the 1st half and the ball on the 9yd line elects to kick a field goal on 3rd down. I don't know if the rules were different and an incomplete pass didn't stop the clock, or what. But in today's world no coach would do that, even if out of timeouts they would at least try a pass into the endzone. Incomplete? Kick the FG on 4th down.
I'll never forget it. My junior year at ND. Great anticipation following a 2-7 season under interim head coach Hugh Devore. A great year which ended in heartbreak, thanks to the USC-payrolled referees. Terry, I respectfully disagree with your assessment of the 3rd down field goal. It was a close game, 10-0 at that point, and we were the visitors. It is not unusual to kick a FG on 3rd down and preserve the 4th down for a second try if the first is not successful. The video doesn't say whether or not we had any TOs left. If not, then what if we tried to pass on 3rd down but Huarte was sacked? The clock runs out with no points on the board. I would support the 3rd down field goal all day if it gives us a 13-0 lead against a tough Wisconsin team at their home field. There are a lot of coaches whose decisions could be second-guessed. Ara is not one of them.
Oh and you young guys won't understand the season starting so late for the Irish. But I remember that when I went to Texas in the fall of 1964, first day of classes was something like 2 weeks after Labor Day. Fall Semester didn't end till we got back from Christmas break in early Jan and Finals were mid January.
What happened with the P.A.T. on the last three scores? Score went from 13 to 19, to 25, to 31. I can understand the 19 score since if it was legal back then, they probably went for two to make the score 21 to 7 but mist the conversion. The other two... no idea.
I don't really question the decision to go for the FG, certainly the conservative thing. But I can't remember the last time I saw a coach in todays game go for a FG on 3rd down. I do remember in the past doing that, but it was usually in end of game situations where the FG wins the game. I do see coaches in OT in todays game going for the FG on 3rd down, again when the FG wins the game, but just not in the situation that Ara was in at the end of the half. Now as I said maybe the rules then didn't stop the clock on incomplete passes and maybe Ara didn't have any timeouts left to call if Huarte got sacked. Also, Tom must really be bored today to watch old ND video from before he was born!
 re: FG on 3rd down I see it all the time out here. If the field goal is blocked and your team recovers it, you make another FG attempt... re: Huarte to Snow This was a great SoCal Catholic school combination. John Huarte was from Mater Dei HS in Santa Ana and Jack Snow was from St. Anthony HS in Long Beach...
Your new starting OL. Giving up on Elmer as an OT and supposedly Nick Martin has a hand issue that has hindered him as a Center. STARTING OL: LT Ronnie Stanley LG Nick Martin C Matt Hegarty RG Steve Elmer RT Christian Lombard
ND <t>I like the changes on the OL. Let's hope it makes a difference. Kelly says Carlisle won't play sat but the Hunter kid will start. Kelly always seems to be high on Hunter so let's see if the kid has the stuff. Maryland seemed to do some damage with their back out out the slot so maybe we can too.<br/> <br/> Sounds like we get collinsworth back which is great. <br/> <br/> The word on "The Five" made me so mad I don't want to talk about it for now.</t>
