 The heat and noise has already started. Storm clouds are gathering and something wicked this way comes... Yes. It's scary. That's what's great about it. The Fighting Irish are back. If we lose, it's gonna hurt. If we win, the sky is the limit and everyone will hate us. We're back in the ring with a bruising defense to knock people down and their whining is music to our ears. Remember, it could be worse... we could be on the other side of this game... Oklahoma's all-time record is 1-8 vs. Notre Dame. Years ago, when I attended the last Irish arse whipping of the Sooners. Our plane was forced down by bad weather and we had to sit on the floor of some airport in Missouri for hours. To pass the time, I had long conversations with several Sooner big-shots who were on their way home. You knew they were Sooner suits, because they dripped money and had many stories about golfing with OU Heisman winner Steve Owens, Gov. David Boren, and they believed that it was a "crime" that Barry Switzer wasn't in the Hall of Fame... What struck me the most about their thinking wasn't all the famous Sooners they went golfing with...it was their fear of Notre Dame. They honestly respected and admired Notre Dame, but their fear clouded everything they had seen at the game. I thought that it had been an even matchup and I was glad that we won. Their attitute was that they were relieved to get out of there without the Irish scoring even more points against them. They asked many questions about how Oklahoma and their new coach (Bob Stoops) appeared to Irish fans. They wanted to know if we feared them (I said we didn't) and they wanted to know if they looked better under Stoops. (I said that they did.) It was almost as if they needed the approval of Irish fans for everything their football program did... Yes, Irish fans...there is concern on our side, but there is real fear and angst in Norman, Oklahoma going on right now. The Irish are back...and the wicked fears of the past are crowding into the thoughts of Sooner fans everywhere. We're living inside their heads rent free... .................Even My John Donne is Back......JO'Co
That's right the OU game was a Skybox game, I'd forgotten tha.t. I remember reading that the airport in South Bend hosted a record number of private Jets for that game. Bob Stoops has never beaten ND! We are already a 10 point underdog, OU has scored over 100 points in the last 2 games. The Irish have scored 37. They have the best QB we will face till USC, with fleet WR's and fast RB's. They rarely ever lose at home under Bob "Big Game" Stoops. They are licking their chops at the Irish who they believe are badly over rated, they expect to heal many old wounds on Saturday night. There will be no mercy given, Stoops if he can will run the score up on the Irish. I like it, being a big underdog, nobody gives us a chance.
I'm not sold on OU. Sure, they beat the crap out of a VASTLY overrated texas team, but they are still the team that got their heads handed to them by KSU, a team not dissimilar from ND. I wouldn't bet on this one with Terry's money!
These are the games that we used to relish. Games like the '73 Sugar Bowl, the '78 Cotton Bowl, the '88 game with Miami and the '93 game with FSU. These are the kind of games that ND has to win before we are B-A-C-K.
I have a recollection of watching part of the game in 1957, when ND won 7-0, halting the OU 47-game winning streak.
There's an enormous amount of respect on both sides, with a healthy amount of hatred on one. Both sides will be holding their breath for the next 5 days because this one is a big fork in the road. One road stays on path to the NC and the other path still has off-ramps for a good to great season, but no ticket to the big dance. It's fun to be back in this position. Does anyone know what our goofy ass offense is going to do this week? I sure don't, and that's fun too.
Well we will be at the Florida - Georgia game but should be back to catch this game. Another game at the same time I am interested in is Alabama - Miss State. The other Dawgs have quietly gone unbeaten and I guess we will se how good they are Sat. Good luck.
I recall the '66 ND-OK game. It was billed as a showdown between to unbeatens but as is posted above, it wasn't much of a contest. The Sooners had a highly rated LB named (I think) Granville Liggens. He took a cheap shot out of bounds on one of our RBs. On the next play, he was carried off the field and was gone for the game. Coincidence.....I'm sure.
ND has been winning... and that's what counts. But the Notre Dame of old.....the one that inspired true fear in the hearts of Sooners..... was a team that dominated inferior opposition and could always beat anyone of equal or greater talent on their schedule. This year's team probably inspires great concern......because they have shown they know how to get the win.... but Sooner fear? I dunno.....
ND <r>I don't really care why OU fans hate ND. I'm sure they'll be out in force at the game. I doubt this ND team will be intimidated by anything the OU fans say or do. Annoyed might be more like it. ND is used to playing in packed stadiums with tons of opposing fans spewing their hatred at them. <br/> <br/> If Golson and the offense come around and we are able to score around 30 or so points, we might pull this off. If not, it may be a long night cause even as good as ND's defense is, I doubt they can hold this team under 24 <B><s></s>IF<e></e></B> they(OU) are as good as advertised.</r>
The Stanford/ND game was called the SAT Bowl, given that both programs are ranked in the Top 25 of the USNWR college rankings and both schools students have high SAT's and both schools have high grad rates for their football players. OU is the polar opposite of ND as a football program. We of course always rank in the top 10 of grad rates, and have been number 1 on a number of occassions. OU is always near the bottom and rarely has a grad rate the exceeds 50% for football players.

These are the things that set off a great many SEC fans when you try to explain why ND is different. Alabama fans can lose their mind about ND..not even realizing how they are proving my point with their actions.. We've caused OU fans a lot of pain and they'll be looking for pay back. It makes things fun
