Just got through watching the game, awesome upset. I won't get overly worked up that it means we are headed to the top 25. We still are a flawed team with not a lot of big men inside. But at home, when our 3 point shooters are hot we can be tough to beat. I was worried that we would give the game to them in the 2nd half when we went to the "Burn" or what they used to call the 4 corners offense...which is fine if you make a lot of baskets but we burned clock and didn't score for big stretch there and then we had in bounds pass deflected into Syracuse's basket...haven't seen that before... and a couple of other turnovers against their press. But once we got to where they had to foul it was ovah. Good win, we'll still have to play extemely well just to be a .500 Big East team. But for tonight ...We are the Champions!
No it wasn't. It wasn't over until - as Terry said - they were forced to foul in the last couple of minutes. As long as our lead was single digits, Syracuse was within striking distance. I started breathing easier with 1 minute left.
Of course it didn't hurt that the Cuse center Melo wasn't traveling with the team for "academic" reasons.
Jack Cooley owned the paint and he owned it all night long. His control of the boards allowed the Irish to make this a very short game. The guards almost gave it away late in the second half with their inability to break the press, but as long as it was a half court game, Cooley's physical play kept the clock going...
