Notice that in posting this I am placing public opinion about the incident squarely on the edge.....it could go either way. Now.....of course I defend Meyer because when I first saw this I thought it was B/S creative reporting....something intended to get someone's dander up. In this case that someone was Meyer. http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20100324/ARTICLES/100329682/1136?Title=Meyer-has-heated-exchange-with-reporter-after-practice
Sounds very Mike Gundyish! BTW did you see that report that Tebow wanted his Wonderlic group to pray before taking the test and some buddy told him to shut the f$ up and sit down...or something like that. Of course we'll never know exactly what he said as he was struck dead by a bolt from the heavens right after that!
For the record I think that reporters who clearly try to stir something up like that are trash. I'm thinking he missed the sarcasm in the kids tone, or didn't want to hear it cause it was juicier to report it the way that he did. Also a lesson for the kid that you have to be careful what you say to reporters, you think that you are joking around and they're cool...the next thing you know you're getting skewered.
No one commented on the most important item in that article. Meyer is back coaching! Terry, I did hear about the incident at the Wonderlick test. I'm sure that Tebow has heard it before. And I agree with your assessment of that writer. AJ, maybe we should see if Osborne is available?
Ya know Bill, he might be available for consultation. He's travelin' right now. Last I saw him he was in Minnesota.
Meyer has been taking an absolute beating in the press. They have rallied around their collegue. I was listening to ESPN Radio last night on the way home from and they were talking about it and the host would absolutely skewer any caller who's take was anything other than Meyer was wrong and should apologize. Same thing on local morning drive time sports. Meyer wrong and should apologize.
Here's my take, kids are inexperienced in dealing with the media they say things that they later wish they hadn't when some reporter uses their statements to make some splash hoping to get readers eyeballs. So is a journalist who is dealing with a kid and the kid says something the journalist knows the kid shouldn't really have said have any responsibility to tell the kid...hey kid what you just said is going to end up being a negative that you are going to have to defend and I'm not going to print it but I want you to in the future think about what you say to the press before you say it.
Terry, I also have heard the ESPN heads saying what you heard. I see it as a circle-the-wagons mindset among the media. What they don't realize is that anyone outside their profession with a brain understands what Meyer did and why he did it. They can pontificate all they want about it, but all it does is show how they mindlessly flock together when one of their own is under the gun.
It's a reporter feeding frenzy. I think Gator Bill has said that Bianchi has it out for Meyer and the Gators. He really goes after Meyer in todays column. Bianchi on Meyer
This guy is sensationalizing the issue. To say that Meyer "threatened" Fowler implies physical action. Yes, he did threaten Fowler. He threatened that further action of this sort would result in the Orlando paper being banned from Florida practices. There is a big difference in the two. Now, the issue of whether or not that should have been threatened is between Foley and Meyer... not another reporter to decide.
Guys, it isn't Tebow that Meyer is protection but Thomson. Believe it or not he looks at those guys like his own sons and he felt that Thomson's quote could bring people down on him. Also a part of the story that isn't being discussed is that the reporter involved kept hounding Meyer's daughter to find out more about Meyer's health. The media's reaction to this 30 second altercation is exactly the reason I don't listen much to most sports programs. I like a few of the, Lou Holtz, Lee Corso for instance, and can pretty much go the rest of my life without ever hearing many of the others.
I guess Meyer matters..... http://cfn.scout.com/ Hey....it's better than if he was an unheard of also ran....
