I'm not sure what to think about all the new rules, but with regards to unlimited texting and facebook contacts, I can see a kid getting overwhelmed with Texts and Facebook posts from coaches. I get it that it's damn near impossible to police text messages, phone calls, Facebook, Twitter, etc. But unlimited seems to invite abuse (legal though it may be). Urban against new rules
As distracting as the recruiting process is on the kids this new rule sure seems even more intrusive and has to have an effect on the ability to study and live a somewhat normal life...?
Maybe I'm missing something here. Tell me what is wrong with deregulating something that is impossible to police.
If your ethos is to protect the interest of the student-athlete while perpetuating at least the myth of amateur athletics... then this is a bad thing. It is tough to police, but not impossible. You have to log all of your activity in recruiting..or at least, used to.. Any phone, computer, tablet, laptop, bullhorn..whatever that you use to contact a recruit immediately became open to review at any time by your NCAA compliance director and the NCAA.. Any failure to comply, or stated overage was an NCAA violation. Pure and simple. Now, you're saying you don't give a damn.. blow that kid up... I mean, kids already turn off their phones now and disconnect numbers just to get a little sanity..and that was with the regulations. Now imagine the media bombardment that these kids will face. And the cost? Holy cow.. you can't imagine. At least there was a ceiling before.. now you have no holds barred. And speaking of that.. one thing ND has historically hurt itself by taking a slightly holier than thou approach to things rather than getting dirty in the trenches. I hope the Irish hire a media firm (they no longer have to be coaches) and run people right into the ground out spending everyone. I hope they utilize their network affiliation and push the envelope of what few rules there are.
Agreed Corey, bad news here......the rich will get richer and it is the kids that will suffer. The gap between the haves and have-nots has just gotten wider and that much more difficult to bridge.... As fans of one of the haves, I guess we should be happy, but it just seems like a bad thing for these kids.
and have nots with lots of money (Ole Miss anyone), I see them going full nuke here. This will just result in harassing kids and running them into the ground. I know what Tom is saying.. the NCAA has done an awful job of policing this so they just let go. That being said, they don't persecute these things properly. The rules were fine and right there in place, it's a matter of accountability. There's a disconnect too often between the university's compliance team and the NCAA. Those employees of the school, when done right, need to be working closer with the NCAA than they do the school. Sadly, that's not the case and it can create cover up/white wash situations in which enforcement becomes very tough.
