This is just maddening.. I know a lot of this has to do with the clamp down on campus drinking/rules that forced parties off campus.. So now we get crap like this.. I hear it was a full blown task force taking down this party.. WOW. http://www.wsbt.com/sports/irish/28884989.html
So my hatred of these drinking crack downs and alcohol related task forces is well known. I just want to know when we'll have the 'Hot Pocket task force?' http://www.wsbt.com/news/local/28554039.html
Where to start. I guess I'm getting old. Today the kids go out and party after losses. This is probably the last we see of Yeatman for the season if not permanently. Two drinking busts in one year... outta here! Mike Golic Jr. We hardly knew ya. I hope he didn't get into a game yet because he's probably a red shirt now. I'm sure these players were amply warned in advance. They deserve whatever they get.
Yeatman is very likely toast, he was previously suspended for DUI...Golic will get somewhere between season suspension and a couple of games. 2AM in at a neighborhood party that was loud enough to generate complaints, they didn't think cops would show up? I know the whole underage drinking thing is a problem that we don't really know how to deal with, but they were stupid to go and drink underage at that party.
Let me toss in that it seems to be well known in the community that SB and Indiana excise police are on a mission to stamp out underage drinking. So if you are going to be drinking underage, a block party that is going to draw the cops isn't the best place to do it.
Golic Jr. should have known better. After all, classes started a month ago. After 1 mo. freshmen know everything that they need to know about parties, drinking, off campus get togethers etc. They should throw him out of school, lock him up, and throw away the key.
I would think the Sr(upper classmen). leadership on the team would have filled the freshmen in on the situation. At least I hope so, besides he apparently went with Yeatman, maybe initially just as a designated driver. Oh wait that wouldn't work in Indiana as we learned last year when Clausen was busted for being the driver in a car that contained unopened alcohol.
Allison Hayes, who contributes content to Blue & Gold Illustrated and BlueandGold.com from time to time, and Fox News 28 here in South Bend have CONFIRMED through the St. Joseph County Police- Public Information Officer Sgt. William Redman that at 2:00am this morning, police made 37 arrests for underage drinking at a party off Notre Dame's campus. Redman confirmed Jr. Will Yeatman and Fr. Mike Golic, Jr. were among those arrested. They are no longer in custody. Redman also said there were several other Notre Dame football and lacrosse players arrested, but he could not confirm who at this time. The St. Joe county police department will issue an official release Monday. These police actions have been advertised in the local paper for at least one week according to BGI. You can bet your last dollar team officials have been warning the players as well.
Somebody asked Charlie about it at the press conference and he was sort of suprised. Said he was just hearing about it and didn't have any information, thought that the football players were probably too tired to have been there...maybe they saved something for the 5th Qtr Charlie.
So who would have ever thought there would be underage drinking in a college town? George, I remember when I was in college the Fraternity had a party on Football Sat win or lose. That was a long time ago. I just can't get overly excited because a bunch of college students were partying on a Sat night.
Hey if you were a high school recruit, would you be excited about spending 4 yrs in the SB gulag? BYU gets all those recruits.
Kids will be kids and I am not saying they didn't make a mistake. My beef here is that they have entire task forces dedicated to 'taking down the epidemic of underage drinking' meanwhile South Bend has a rather nasty rising violent crime rate.. It gets back to allocation of resources. i eagerly anticipate the creation of the Hot Pocket task force...
If you break the rules you have to pay the price. I hope the Golic kid has learned his lesson. Apparently Yeatman didn't learn his. PJ in Jersey
That's true Terry. I only would want the football team members to get the same treatment as the general population of students at worst and if the general population was being inconsistently treated depending on the individual cop then I would want more consistent application of the rules amongst the police force itself. I suppose if it appeared the rules were then too strict and oppressive they could be reviewed but in general if college kids are being college kids and no one is being endangered then sometimes you have to acknowledge that.
When you force the parties off campus, you are asking for this.. and by this, I mean police task forces storming in and busting up college parties that have gone on for a long, long time. It isn't like I am making this up. Read the student reports in the off-season. For real fun, read the society/real estate pages on various boards.. People are leaving the area because of violent crime...but we have entire task forces doing beer party crackdowns. Blah
LOL that is nuts.. at the same time, there is a reason for these types of crackdowns. This is not dangerous to enforce and the kids getting popped are the ones whose parents pay fines... no court appointed attorneys there.. busting those kids is good for the economy.
Hold on a minute! My son comes home all the time with stories of accidents involving drunk teens. The idea that police have to bust up keg parties as a revenue source is laughable. They don't have the time nor the inclination to do that; they have more serious things to keep them busy. They only bust up parties after numerous complaints from neighbors. As I said earlier, this particular crackdown was advertised for at least one week prior to the event in the local paper. And you can bet team officials warned these guys repeatedly. Plus they have personal responsibility to act accordingly. What they are really guilty of is gross stupidity.
George, I use to laugh about the subject of Indiana and its booze laws/enforcement myself. I'd suggest you read up on it. They literally have 'raid teams' to bust things up in the region. They are always going on up there. They hit bars searching for underage drinkers, they hit house parties searching for the same... Somehow I think that we could be better served in Indiana patrolling the growing crime areas... but that is just me.. http://www.in.gov/atc/isep/ Law enforcement in NJ is not the same as it is everywhere.
