http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/7143961/ncaa-weighing-2000-payments-student-athletes Any thoughts amongst all of our intelligent posters here!
I don't think it's a big deal, it will help athletes who are responsible, to get needed books, supplies etc. I don't know how the logistics will be handled, that is will they all just get a check for 2K or 1K per semester, or what? If the money goes directly to the athletes I can see some of them getting a new stero system or doing something with it that was not the intent. But even if they do it's not a big deal to me at least. But on the issue of worrying about athletes not being able to take their girl friend to a movie and get a burger with her I don't think this is going to make much of a dent. Not that movies are that expensive, just that if it's used for school stuff and the amount is proper then there shouldn't be much left over. It won't make the "pay the players" go away though.
It would appear to me this might very well be an effort to defeat any "Pay for Play" proposals. I do think it is a step in the right direction.
My impression is that it's walking around money. I'm not sure how many scholarship athletes are in the average university. For the big boys it's no big deal but for some programs already operating in the red it will put more financial pressure on their budgets. It might face some stiff opposition when it's voted on.
What does the NCAA care? It's not their money they are voting on? There's an idea. Let the NCAA pay the players. I wonder what that vote would be?
Hey, if this was enacted two years ago, a Tennessee player wouldn't have had to rob someone with a BB gun for spending money... or... he may have used the money to get a real gun and robbed a bank!
 Pay for play is the end of college football. Take a look at minor league baseball. That's the future for college football if you pay the players...
