I guess the KO return is going to be a rare bird if they move the kicker up 5 yards and make a touchback come out to the 25 now. I don't really care for that rule where if a players helmet comes off he has to sit out a play, I don't get it. I can't remember seeing a player needing a play to put his helmet back on plus if I'm reading it correctly the rule won't apply to helmets that come off as a result of grabbing the facemask. That makes no sense. As far as players leaping over blockers and attempting to block a punt...meh.
I have mixed emotions about the new rule on kickoffs. While the purpose is clear enough, I will miss the lack of opportunities to witness a long return for a TD. That possibility has always been pleasurable to watch, especially wth players like Ted Ginn Jr.
John and I noticed a rash of helmets coming off last year and theorized that many players were getting lax about securing them properly, whether for comfort or whatever. That might explain the rule.
Stu, that was my first thought too. Making them come out for a play gives them incentive to make sure that their helmet is on correctly.
I think Stu and gipper have it as far as the helmets. I have mixed feelings on the kickoffs. Love the long run backs but don't love the injuries.
When a player's helmet comes off...the clock stops. Now there's a penalty for having your helmet come off. It's a good rule that will penalize out-of-gas defenses that are using gimmicks and fake injuries to stop the clock and slow down hurry-up offenses.
