The Mountain West has proposed an eight team playoff for the NC. Mountain West Proposes Eight Game Playoff Dennis Donn also comments Mountain West Wasting Time Well I'm off for a night of what I used to call bowling now I just chunk the ball down the lane and hope!
Terry, looks like we posted within a minute of each other and I missed your post. What don't you like? I found this kind of interesting. You don't think the MWC picked numbers that would qualify them do you?
Bill, As I pointed out quite clearly, the MWC stacks up quite nicely against anyone so it isn't a matter of 'dipping the records' to get them in. In both noncons against BCS conference opponents and in bowl games, the MWC continues to show that they belong. I also explained why I don't see the Pac10/Big10 buying into anymore ponzi schemes in the future. They will have to be forced to do something.. which of course brings me back to the point about their horse sh*t leadership. Terry, I agree with you on this. I'd take an 8 team playoff though. 16 is ideal, but an 8 would do.
8 team playoff will cause more hard feeling than the current system. Nothing short of 16 team playoff will be worth a flip. With 8 teams you aren't going to get the autobid from the BCS conferences, and it just means the at large spots are more hotly contested and those on the outside after the selections more offended/pissed off/outraged.
Good point. Have we ever had a year thought in which 8 teams had a claim to the title at the end? But I'm with you, 16 is PERFECT and it takes one month.
As soon as you expand it to 8 teams the whole mindset changes, it's no longer whether or not there are 3 teams (or maybe even 4) who deserve to be in the championship game, it's wheter or not those 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th teams are really better than the 9th, 10th. 11th and 12th teams. More pissed off people. Plus as I said you are no way going to get the autobid away from the BE,ACC,B12,SEC,Pac10,B10, there is even more outrage when a 17th ranked WVA gets in the playoffs over teams ranked above them. With the current system it's just hard feelings over the money and prestige of getting to a BCS bowl. With the 8 team playoff it's that and being screwed out of a chance to make a run at the Nat'l Championship. +1, sucks, 4 team playoffs sucks big time, 8 team playoff sucks donkey's. 16 team playoff allows Non-BCS schools into the mix much easier and takes care of fairness type of issues for the most part, while still allowing autobids to BCS conference schools. I'm sure there'll will always be that 17th team who thought they should have gotten in over the 16th team just like there are always 5 or 6 teams who people think should have gotten NCAA basketball bids.... 16 teams is the only way to go.
For me, this economy has put quite a few things into perspective. I believe that college sports will become even more fun for me because its importance has moved several steps down the ladder. The way I feel right now, as long as Tennessee is respectable, I will be happy to go to the games, win or lose. I don't really care if we keep the system as it is, revert back to earlier days, or go to a playoff. My priority is to stay employed, support my family, see good friends, and enjoy anything to do with Tennessee (and now the Round Rock Express). Cindy and I just became season ticket holders to the local AAA team that is an affiliate of the Houston Astros. I guess what I am saying is that my concerns are elsewhere. I'll enjoy sports more because I will not "live and die" by the success or failure of my teams... as long as they are respectable.
Tom, Couldn't agree with you more. Terry, Couldn't agree with you less What you are missing is that '7th or 8th' team now has quite often been the unbeaten teams from the 'nonBCS' conferences or that once or twice beaten team that suffered some injuries early, but now are just red hot at the end of the season and finally firing on all cylinders... OR that team that played the brutal schedule and dropped two road games. At this time, those teams are ALL excluded and stand no shot at the title. Meanwhile, a panzy ass noncon and a decent conference reputation will put you in the fast line to a BCS title game. When you go to the expanded format, I no longer have an issue with the autobid for the BCS conference champs. The only way you wind up with MORE pissed off people is if you have 3 teams from the Big10, Big12, SEC, Pac10, etc making it into the playoff instead of an unbeaten or once beaten 'nonBCS' conference champ. I seriously think you don't grasp just how many people think this current system is a joke.
I don't really care how many people think it's a joke. I just want to go to a 16 team playoff, it's the only system that isn't a joke and is fair to everybody.
From your lips to God's ears Terry. But the realist in me just can't believe it will happen without trying an 8 tema format first.
