Well let's see if this one gets any interest. College Football 10 Most Unbreakable Records Here's number 2, by a Gator.
I remember the game when ND broke OK's win streak. Without looking it up, I believe the score was 7-0. Some of these records probably will not be broken, like Barry Sanders' single season rushing average. How about 36 punts in one game? Was the guy punting for both teams?
Sid, pretty funny about the punts. I don't think both teams would punt that much these days. Those were the days of 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Punt on 3rd down. Three things can happen when you throw a pass and two of them are bad
Two of those record holders ended up on the Lions. Andre Ware was a complete bust. Barry Sanders was the most exciting football player I ever saw.
Sid, I remember watching that game, with Notre Dame winning to break that long winning streak by Oklahoma. I was a junior in high school at the time B/White TV! (grin) Who was the QB for the Irish that year?
kp, maybe in some ways I long for those days. However for the most part I prefer today's more wide open game. Gipper Sanders sure was exciting. As I recall he retired over some dispute with the Lions? Regardless, if Sanders had not retired early he would have the NFL rushing record instead of one of my favorites Emmitt Smith. I do remember the Oklahoma streak but didn't remember who broke it. I remember the long Notre Dame streak being broken in 1950 by Purdue. I had just started watching and following football and being in Miami I was a Hurricane fan. Anyhow Purdue broke the string and the Hurricanes upset Purdue at Purdue 20-14. That game put Miami on the map. They didn't reach there real heights though until the 80's when they won so many games and NC'S.
Bill Sanders retirement was always a mystery. Lion's fans of course blamed the team. My theory has always been that Barry was not willing to risk his body any more. He was on the field when Mike Utley was paralyzed and his last regular season game he not only rushed for 2000 yds. in a season but also Reggie Brown was felled by a nearly fatal injury. Brown never played again. Seeing 2 teammates go down with devastating injuries might have been enough for Barry to say to himself, "let's get out while we're still healthy."
Don, I couldn't remember the ND QB who ended the Oklahoma streak, so I looked it up. He was Bob Williams, who was drafted by the Chicago Bears but chose to enroll in med school instead. His son played center for the NY Giants from 1989 to 1999, and his grandson currently is a TE for the Baltimore Ravens.
Andre Ware... That was back when the Wrecking Crew was still alive and well. We didn't totally shut him down, but we beat the crap out of him... Got his lid knocked off once and it made for a great picture.
gipper, I certainly cannot blame a player from stepping away from the game while still healthy. As much as I love football I find it kind of distressing how many great players are so physically impaired later in their lives.
