Seems to be tightening the screws and intending to run a tight ship.

No guns, freshmen and sophmores have to live on campus. The gun thing is an automatic dismissal if caught with one.

I'm glad to see he's taking a stand and I hope the players listen. It will be diffiicult for him though if a starter has a gun, which he is constitutionally entitled to own, and he kicks him off the team.

Ah but Terry, that's the beauty of being a "private" institution.
They could tell a player not to spit on the sidewalk if they want, and he's out if he does it.

He's not telling them they can't have guns. Only that they can't have guns AND play football for Miami.

    I like it.

Are you saying that a coach at a "non-private" achool couldn't tell his players that if they have guns they can't play? Hell, the NBA has told its players to lay off the guns.

In other news, apparently the city of Miami is not able to fund the planned upgrades/renovations to the Orange Bowl and the Hurricanes will be moving to Dolphin Stadium.

Hurricanes to Move to Dophin Stadium

BTW is Dolphin Stadium without a corporate sponsor?

Overall I think this is probably a good move for the Canes. I'm sure the city of Miami is not happy, but the Orange Bowl is old, out of date and the parking situation is terrible.

One problem is that the Dolphin stadium is further from the campus than the Orange Bowl. That is one of the problems that the Canes have is not having an on campus stadium.

Like I've said before I have a lot of fond memories about the Orange Bowl, but the last experience I had there was not that great.

On balance I think this is a good move for the Canes.

No gip, I didn't mean private vs public school.
    Should have worded that better.
I meant that it isn't a "right" to go to college, but a privelage. You bust the rules, and it doesn't matter what's legal, only that you broke the rule.

I agree with you Scott. I was surprised with Bobby Knight's comments about the "0ne-year" players who he claims do not go to classes second semester because they're heading to the pros. My question is, why are they playing if they're not going to class? Is the coach looking the other way? Is that any example to his other players?

I'm not surprised at all, if you really didn't want to go to college in the first place but the NBA said you had to go, then it's not shocking at all that these guys aren't going to class. Although to be fair BK should have not made such a blanket statement. Oden is still going to class for example, I don't know about Kevin Durant.

I really wish the NBA and College Basketball would make the same deal that that Baseball has with college. That make the most sense to me.

    Terry,

Oden is a pretty good student, but he is only taking 10 hours. A course in Sociology and some type of music course. Last information on grades was like 3.7

The term student athlete is a very much abused term in my opinion.

    Don,

Correct me if I'm wrong but with OSU's quarter system Oden really has to go to class doesn't he? Doesn't the Winter Quarter end before the NCAA tourney and if he didn't go he'd be ineligible for the tournament? But that doesn't change wheter he is is a legit student in that he goes to class, wheter the class schedule is challenging or not.

I think the NCAA requires you pass a min of 24 hrs a year, and that a lot of football players take the min that their university allows and still be called a full time student, then they make it up in the Spring and summer.

He gets 2 hours for his basketball participation, giving him a total of 12 hours, the minimum for a full time student.

Though he is only taking two classes, from all reports he takes them seriously and does the work.
