As I have stated before, with all things being equal the BCS Championship results of the past 5 years do....in fact matter when BCS selection time comes around. At least Mandel of SI thinks so:

It's really terribly unfair that the notion that the SEC Champ deserves 1/2 of the BCS champ game and the rest of college football is competing for the other slot has crept into our thinking. Not taking anything away from the SEC's 5 year run but still every year is a new year and what you did last year shouldn't factor into anything.

But it does Terry and the key phrase is...."all things being equal".....

If no other edge is evident the SEC stands on it's merit of having won 5 straight BCS Title games against the best teams on the country.

It shouldn't be though. This year is this year and last year is last year.

It's funny.. For all the Auburn fans I've spoken to who are openly terrified that their title is going to get taken away because even they think their admin is corrupt...to read the line 'All things being equal.'

    LOL

we live in a world of hyperbole and ********.

"The SEC has dominated." Is a line I read way too much.

You won a last second FG.. I mean, hats off on the win and everything but let's not bother with the truth or anything. The SEC's run is 'proof' but the Mountain West's run was a 'fluke'..

All I know is that the Pac12 has more than acquitted themselves on the big stage. No one could deny the talent or quality.. it was 'the road' and that 'road' is somehow tied to a conference title game.. That the Pac12 now has.

As Terry said... last season was last season. This season is this season. Every year there's a new excuse but the problem is always the same.

If "all things were equal" all conferences would be oversigning their asses off like the SEC. (there are some exceptions.)

Don't we usually wait until July or August before the SEC chest beating starts?

I guess Mandel decided it was still a worthy topic.

Yeah, but you usually don't poke your head out posting these articles until summer...

Actually, if you read the article...and not just the title...

You are always boasting about how tough the SEC is to negotiate, but the column is about how the B1G and Pac-12 have toughened their road up.

Also I agree with his and your premise of SEC may get the nod in a tiebreaker...if you preface it with "may not be fair" as Mandel did.

It might be unfair....it might be fair.....if all else is perceived as being equal then who knows what is right or wrong for the selection?

Hey the summer edges ever closer and the preseason mags are going to be hitting the newstands soon so FB talk will be heating up soon as well.

over signing athletes in droves, big cash payolas and you still need to win on a last second field goal...

It's as absurd as locking the ACC or Big East champ into the basketball title game without having to earn the invite in a manner similar to other particpants....and then perpetuate the canard by touting past game results...it's the classic biased selection argument....a chest thumpers dream.

It's the system we have and we are stuck with it until such time as a playoff were to be implemented.

If BB had a similar system then you would see the ACC and Big East certainly have a leg up....."all else being equal"....for one of the top spots.

......which is precisely why the system is absurd

Those that think the system is terrible have the option of not watching the championship game.

    I agree with Tom.

In the interest of full disclosure, you SEC guys might want to read what Brian Kelly said:

ND will be taken serious when........

True enough Bill....but I assume it's also OK if we watch the game but continue to lobby for a system that enables worthy teams at least an opportunity to compete for the title on the field of play? Doesn't seem to be too much to ask.....
