Ok somebody explain to me why with a 2 point lead, 24 - 22, 2nd and 2 at midfield and only 1:29 to play you would throw 2 passes in a row and not run the ball. Most likely you get a first and for sure you run time off the clock. Instead 2 incomplete passes and Clemson gets the ball back and drives to a field goal for a win. I think the best team tonight won, but Les Miles blew it. Happy New Year all.
Today will go down in college football history. The much maligned ACC dominated two of the best teams in the Pac12 and the SEC.
Bill you've watched the Hat make many questionable decisions...so surely this doesn't really surprise you does it? I'll give it to Taj Boyd though, that kid has a pair bigger than that squirrel that AJ keeps posting a picture of here....well proportionately that is of course! I got really irritated at Ed Cunningham who seemed spend the whole game calling for Clemson to put a skirt on Taj Boyd. I really got tired of his babbling on this. I have to give it to LSU defense though those dudes really kept bring it, the LSU offense though is inexplicably average. They have big backs, fast WR's who have great hands, a butt load of OL's...but just haven't been very good for awhile now.
No doubt true Sid, but most coaches would have won the game for LSU even though they had been outplayed. Unreal play calling at the end.
Terry, I think the hat has lost some of his luster. He also lost the Alabama game with questionable play calling in the 4th quarter.
How about his play calling in last years NC game. He has great defenses and recruits great offensive talent...does nothing with it. I'd think at some point La kids who want to play offense and be developed would look elsewhere...maybe west to College Station.
Yeah in last years championship game he runs the ball and doesn't pass, tonight when gaining two yards on two plays would have won the game he passes two times, both incomplete. Go figure. You have to think these kind of performances would eventually hurt his recruiting.
That's true Terry, but the Gators are back on track and Texas A & M has the look of a winner. LSU could have some problems down the road. And they have to play Alabama every year.
LSU won't ever drop off on talent because they literally own the state of Louisiana. They put a heavy dent in TX towns like Houston and can dip into Alabama as well as Florida.... hell, they did that with DiNardo.. They won't be dropping off any time soon. That's a team that needs a QB. If they ever find a real one, they'll be something. btw, both of those teams are far superior to their coaching staffs...
 The Mad Hatter struck again. The ONLY reason that LSU lost that game was his stopping the clock with his stupid play calling. BTW- remember when he told the media that Notre Dame recruit Gunner Kiel "didn't have the chest" to play at LSU? Well...it appears that Gunner Kiel is on the roster of a team in the NC game, as LSU circled the drain against an ACC team, because of their incompetent coach...
yep, 3 passes and out! Why? He tried a fake punt on 4th and 9 against Alabama. Why? Mad Hatter? That stupid stuff is finally catching up to him. He was never a genius, he was just lucky but a lot of folks thought he was something else. :?
I agree..... he has been lucky in the past with some of his trick calls. None luckier than the fake field goal against Florida two years ago that bounced off the turf by mistake but right up into the kicker's hands who ran for the first down....... :x
You can't assume LSU would have won if LSU had run the ball. LSU was 3 for 9 on 3rd down. There was enough time left for Clemson to stop the run, which they had done several times, and march down the field, like they did. I'm not a Les Miles fan but, contrary to popular thought, he's not totally stupid. He's made questionable decisions at critical points in games (cite: the fake punt described above by kp), but last night LSU simply was not running the ball effectively. They needed to pass to retain possession. It's easy to second-guess after the fact. Clemson was determined to get the ball back, whether LSU ran or passed. In the game, Clemson ran 100 plays to LSU's 48. In the last Clemson drive the LSU defense was completely gassed. LSU players were going down and out on almost every play. THe LSU secondary was decimated. Clemson won the game because they wanted it more, and they refused to lose. They amassed 445 total yard and 32 1st downs to LSU's 219 yards and 9 1st downs. Those stats would have meant nothing if Clemson had lost, but in the end the stats showed that Clemson wore down LSU's defense and was able to move the ball on them in the final game-winning drive. Re: Gunner Kiel. LOL! My new name for the LSU coach is Chesty Miles.
Sid, I didn't mean to take anything away from Clemson. Boyd played a hell of a game and Clemson deserved to win, but when you need to run time off of the clock, at least one running play, maybe two go a lot farther than incomplete passes. ????? Clemson didn't even need to call a timeout when LSU had the ball.
kp, I know and appreciate what you were saying, and I understand the second-guessing of Miles. Heck, he's made his bed and deserves to be second-guessed. I understand that you were not taking away from Clemson. My point was that in this case it was reasonable coaching strategy that didn't pan out. Miles was concerned about not being able to get a 1st down running the ball and punting it to Clemson with time for Clemson to score again. As it turned out, that's exactly what happened when LSU could not complete a pass for a 1st down to keep possession. Speaking of Boyd and the WR Hopkins, if they come back next year, I'm thinking that Clemson will be a preseason top 10 team.
I've said it before, I'll keep saying it... Miles is an idiot. He's NOT a good coach, but usually his talent overpowers his stupid ideas. In this case... I could understand one pass... when it was clear at third down you probably aren't going to run for it... but even then it could be a screen or something that allows the clock to run. At that point the clock was his friend if it's running. He gave it the finger, and so it gave Clemson enough time to spank him.
Of course Miles' luckiest call came against Florida... of course.. Why can't we just enjoy the game between two incredibly talented teams with dipshits for head coaches? Dabo tried to give that away several times. He's no genius himself. The real killer in that last drive was the long 4th down conversion. In that D and D situation, there's only like 3 routes that can even be run realistically. The 1 route that should be taken away automatically is the seam route to the deep 3rd, but they gave it up and they gave it up smooth. From there, it was all academic.
The pass on 1st down was brilliant, not expected. After that run the ball twice if you don't get a 1st down, you at least burn more clock and force Clemson to use timeouts. Might have made a difference Clemson at thier own 20 with 1 timeout rather than 3 timeouts.
