A must read. This guy would be a great catch for the reasons outlined in the article: The right man for the job
OK While we're waiting for the sighting of white smoke bellowing from the Dome, why don't the ND fans of the board post their top three candidates for the job. We'll total them up and get some idea of the consensus favorite. I'm going with: 1. Stoops-like his defensive emphasis while at the same time he has had somewhat traditional offenses. 2. Kelly-up and coming coach. Has been successful at every stop. Not as defensive oriented as I'd like. 3. Johnson-loved the way he was able to make Navy a competitive team with a lot more restrictions than an Irish coach will face. Do not like the offense he runs otherwise he might be higher on my list. Note I have written off coaches who do not at the present have staffs to bring. I also do not believe that Meyer and Saban are anywhere near realistic choices.
I would have to go with 1. Stoops. As an OU coach I hate him down to my core, I'm sure he kicks puppies. He twice ran up the score big time on my Alma Mater when he didn't have to, so I question his sportsmanship. I have reveled in his embarassing defeats at the hands of Boise and WVA. But I do believe he would put ND back in the top 10 every year, so I would swallow my objections for the greater good. 2. Jon Gruden. I know there is no chance here, but I just have the feeling that if Gruden took over that he would energize the program to new heights, that he would learn from the mistakes other Pro coaches have made and adapt to the college game. 3. Brian Kelly. A coach with passion, a coach who wants to be at Notre Dame and a coach who has won at every level he's coached. Some have said he couldn't recruit because he has no national contacts, or that he'll bring a Grandville State staff to ND, I don't know of course how he'll recruit or what staff he will bring. I just know that the man knows how to win.
Terry, I would take Stoops in a heartbeat. Interesting, on GatorCountry today there was a post by a writer that Stoops had been offered 50 million for 10 years. I have heard so many Stoops rumors where it came to the Gators that I gave up, but this was not a internet keyboard jockey, he's a legitimate media guy in Florida and an ex Gator player. It's a pay site so I'm not going to quote or mention his name.
Weis was at last nights Football Banquet and did give a speech. He was recieved with a standing ovation by the team, parents and everybody in attendance. He basically said don't feel bad for him, he was going to be fine and he encouraged the guys to finish the semester strong (academically) and stressed the value of their Notre Dame degrees. All four captains gave speeches praising Weis and expressing gratitude to the coach, and sorrow that they weren't able to get it done on the field for him All in all a classy end for Weis at ND.
Well George I saw on ESPN where ND may announce tomorrow. If so we will see just how well you handicap. I see you've changed the order and added a coach.
If we're doing a wish list, I'd just as soon dig up Knute or the Bear. As for who I think we could land...and I would want. (in order) -Johnson -Kelly -Edsell (sic?) -Stoops (great as he is, I think he's travelled too much road to really have the heart for the climb that is the ND position) -Meyer (how do you hire a coach that is already hated by a decent sized portion of your fan base. Ara beat ND without being hated) -Saban, one could only wish...and even though his contract with Alabama allows him to walk away at any time, rest assured, they'd do whatever it took (including renaming the state) to keep him at this point. Auburn fans, however, just might be willing to kidnap him for us.
I saw on ESPN last night that some people expect an announcement today. Do any of you expect to hear today?
ESPN and the Chicago Sun-Times aren't always the most reliable of sources on ND football.... It might happen. If it does, then I think it's Kelly. If it doesn't happen, then you learned what the ND fans did long ago about those 2 sources
That's what I thought also Corey, if it's announced today it's Kelly. That is unless you take George's handicapping seriously.
77, Al Golden!! well played sir!! How the hell could I overlook him? I don't know if he has enough "HC experience" to shut up the nay sayers, but he's a damned fine coach. I don't think we have room for growing pains though. If we did, we would have kept Weis. Have you seen over on NDN that quite a few people over there have been called out on the entire Stoops thing being internet rumor and bullsh*t, with no real legs at all?
The guy who was so outstanding on KO's for Cincy yesterday is being quoted all over the place as saying Brian Kelly told him there was no truth to the ND rumors and that he was staying at UC. Of course Dantonio said the same thing days before he took the MSU job. And I don't remember what lie Franchione told the Alabama players before he got on the plane to College Station.
Well Golden didn't join Charlie's staff beacause at the time JoePa was looking done and they were gonna start looking for a new coach and he would be right up there with next coach. If you can make Temple win, you know something....If Urban and Stoops not there, try a Golden, Edsall up and comers who will have a nice start with Charlie's recruiting classes
I thought the reason Golden didn't join Weis was because he worked for Groh and Groh was part of the tree (family) and you don't take from family...or something like that....so Weis backed off.
LOL! Not surprised. Lots of hot air over there, present company excepted. In fact, present company adds class to an otherwise vapid forum.
