That should be a dandy matchup tonight. That Kentucky QB is slowly building his resume for the Heisman. He has an adavantage of sorts in that nobody expects Kentucky to go undefeated so his chances aren't really tied to Kentucky winning 10 games or more.
*insert 1980s motivational movie montage music here* <t>Kentucky can take a huge step toward solidifying themselves as THE contender in the East, while South Carolina can jam a stick into the spokes of the tires of the Division.<br/> <br/> I think its funny though. When upstart teams come alive in the Pac10, the conference is 'weak' but in the SEC its just 'further proof of parity.'<br/> <br/> That's another topic for another day. This weekend is suppose to be the week that sets the table in the SEC. The way this year has gone, I'm betting its not.</t>
Corey, We will see but I think this year the SEC is in the situation of "there is LSU and then there is everyone else" Of course, it looks like that is the case in all of the other conferences as well. One dominant team and an eight way tie for 2nd.
It's amazing what Kentucky has accomplished since about midway through last season. They are probably going to lose this game but it's still amazing. If S. Carolina wins then S. Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida all have one SEC loss with Georgia and Tennessee going at it this weekend. and of course Florida is playing at LSU with a probable loss, but that would leave our fate in our own hands. If we would win out in the East we would win the East.
Bill wrote: Not so fast my friend. If Tennessee beats Georgia and Florida loses to LSU, Florida would need Tennessee to lose another game. Although that is entirely possible/probable, that does not define "fate in our own hands." Only if Tennessee and Florida have the same amount of SEC loses would Florida be in that position. With two SEC loses to Tennessee's one, we would be in the lead over Florida. In that case, if WE win out, we would win the SEC East. It matters not that both of Florida's losses are in the SEC West. They are still counted as SEC losses. Correct me if I am wrong.
Root for Georgia and you still do not control your own destiny with two losses. You would have to beat Georgia, hope for another Georgia loss, and win out. Again, hardly in control. Your only way to protect your team is to beat LSU! This is all a moot point since Kentucky and South Carolina will probably beat us both.
I believe these are the standings after last night's game: Team * SEC * E Div * East div results SC = 3-1 * 2-0 * W-UG, W-UK UF = 2-1 * 1-0 * W- UT UG = 2-1 * 0-1 * L - SC UK = 1-1 * 0-1 * L - SC VU = 1-1 * 0-0 * no east games UT = 0-1 * 0-1 * L-UF I could be wrong but here's how I see it. If UF loses @ LSU, they will be 2-2 conference but 1-0 div. If UF wins out, they end up 6-2 conf, 5-0 div. If UF loses to LSU but wins the remaining conference games, the only other team that can win the east is UT, as long as UT wins its next 7 conference games. If UT loses any of those 7 games and UF wins out, then UF wins the east. Having said that ... I wonder what the "odds" are for UF going 4-1 (loss to LSU) and UT going 7-0 in SEC play the balance of the season? Heck, I wonder what they are for UF going 4-1 in its next 5 SEC games?? I wouldn't bet on it. BTW, go you mangy dawgs!! 8)
I agree that Tennessee winning the SEC East is about as much of a long shot bet as a Scud missle hitting it's intended target. However, my argument is valid:
Tom Perhaps I don't uderstand your statement, quote below. But, if UGa defeats UT and UF loses to LSU but wins the remaining 4 SEC games, I don't think UGa needs another (third) loss for UF to win the east. UF and UGa would end the season with SEC records of 6-2 UF losing to AU and LSU UGa losing to SCe and UF with UF holding the edge in head-to-head and divisional record. Same would hold true is SCe wins the balance of its SEC games, ex UF. They would have a 6-2 conference record but losing in the tie-breaker because of the loss to UF and their div record would be 4-1 versus UF's 5-0.
GaterZ I admit to a brain damaged moment (I refuse to call them "Senior" moments). It completely slipped my mind that Georgia had a SEC loss. I was under the mistaken impression that it would be Georgia that forced the "destiny control" issue. Never mind...
Tom Believe me when I say .... I know watcha mean. It took me 4 passes at the review of the SEC standings and schedule to arrive at what I thought could happen. Still not sure it is correct. However, what I found is all 6 east teams still have a shot at Atlanta ... with their chances about equal, as of today.
I still contend UF-SC will be for the SEC East. That may possibly be a team with three losses depending on how Ky finished. If KY beats UF to give the Gators 3 conference loses how would a 3 way tie between UF, KY and SC play out. I don't give Tenn much chance as they did lose to Florida and the Vols have tough games left> Possible to lose on 2 but not probable imho. Maybe the Vols sneak in at 2 losses....maybe.. but not if UF-SC play each other with 2 losses each.
Gaterz beat me to it Tom. I think this is right, as it stands now Florida and S. Carolina are in charge of their own destiny. If Tennessee wins against Georgia and Florida loses to LSU then Tennessee and S. Carolina are in charge of their own destiny. If Georgia wins then Florida and S. Carolina are in charge of their own destiny. Kentucky needs S. Carolina to lose to be in charge of their own destiny. I think that's clear as mud. It may be more clear after this weekend.
On the game. It's the first time I've seen the Kentuck QB. He has a nice arm, that TD pass he threw to the TE was a beauty. He doesn't seem to me to be as good though as Brady Quinn was in 2005 or 2006. South Carolina looked weak on offense though till the 4th Qtr, by then I guess Kentuck was worn down...or maybe Smelley was finally warmed up. So. Carolina vs Tenn should be a very good game. I wonder if the Old Ball Coach will let a few rip about Tenn like in the past?
Coming down to Florida and S. Carolina sure is not out of the question. So MCG, what's the status of your leg?
Full length cast for three weeks to see if it will heal enough on it's own> Never had a cast and this one is a doozy. Very...very cumbersome and at times painful. I just hope it works cause I do have a serious degree of tendon rupture. Right now I am home bound for at least three weeks and glad that it's football season. Can't even sit at the table or computer desk because of the extended leg. Wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy...or SEC ref...
MCG I think a 3-way tie between USCe, UK, and UF at 5-3 conference will be broken based upon divison record if UF defeats USCe, UK defeats UF, and USCe has defeated UK. To get those records as assumed, UF must have a 4-1 east record. USCe will have either a 4-1 or 3-2 record as it is already 1-1 against the west. So it will be either 1-2 or 2-1 against the west which means it will either be 4-1 or 3-2 in the east. UK is now 1-1 conference and 0-1 east. If you assume UK goes 5-3 overall and defeats UF then it could go 4-1, 3-2, or 2-3 in the east. Good luck with the leg injury. I've been pretty tied up with my Father as his unplanned abdominal surgery (on top of sinus surgery) has really thrown him. However, he's an incredibly strong man and has a very high threshold for pain, especially for an 84 y/o.
