I was pretty shocked to read this, I thought the Tenn AD was fine with the punishments, etc.

Actually, the attitude of the athletic department has morphed the same way that mine has. color him gone for the 2011-2012 season. Some team is going to get a great coach.

I'm sure that Tom has more insight than me into Pearl's future.

But I will still be surprised if he is fired. He has made himself a bit part of the community and I'm thinking he survives.

Gators will probably lose a few less games if he doesn't though. :)

I don't know Bill he is not getting any support right now from the UT AD or the UT Pres. That is not a good sign. Personally I think he got off easy, he can't even make the Tressel claim that he didn't know the rule, he knew the rule, violated it, and then knowingly lied about it to the UT AD, to the UT Pres and to the NCAA.

Terry, I am not saying Pearl did nothing wrong or even that his punishment might have been more.

What I am saying is that it is really strange to cut his salary, suspend him then let him back only to fire him at the end of the season. It that's what they are going to do then it should have been done earlier in my opinion. Firing him now only makes the AD and Administration look worse.

No skin off my back one way or the other. Heck if you attribute all three games the Gators won against Tennessee this year against Pearl, then he still has a winning record against the Gators.

As to the terrible loss today, I don't think that was really unpredictable with the turmoil around the team this year.

I'll let the Vols make their own decision, but my feeling is that he will be back.

If not, like Tom says, some school will get a coach that knows how to win.

Hamilton was responsible for the Kiffin fiasco. Can't look much worse than that.

If I'm the Tenn. Prez I'm starting to look at Hamilton with more scrutiny.

Bad timing this week on the pearl comments.

It's too bad, he really seemed to fit in the Tenn community. I remember that photo of him all geeked out in Orange for a Lady Vol game. But the other side of the coin is that he broke the rules and he did it purposefully and willfully and then lied about it till confronted with the evidence. In the end he reaped what he sowed.

Tennessee Basketball suffered a loss today that recovery will not even begin within the next 5 years. Was it the right thing to do. Sadly, I say yes. You have to win by doing things the right way!

Tom, I think you are right that it will take some time to recover from this. But basketball is a sport where if you get the right 2-3 players you can turn a program around.

I think Tennessee also needs to have all the NCAA stuff out of the way so they can move forward. If sanctions are still looming out there it might be difficult to sign a good coach.

Mid Majors like Xavier for example are fertile grounds for new coaches in the Bigs. Thad Matta at OSU and Sean Miller at Az are both examples of guys who were successful at Xavier and at the next level as well.

I don't know anything about most of the guys on that list, but I don't think you can lure Turgeon from Texas A&M.

You're right. A&M to Tennessee would be a lateral move at best. Expecially since the NCAA Sword is hanging over our head.

I do believe that this is a great opportunity for a mid major coach to move up. With the possible sanctions, there will be an excuse for a drop off for a few years. A good coach could come in and have ample time to turn the program back to prominence.

There also has been some other things come out that happened after the news conference in the early fall when Pearl admitted, apologized, etc. He had a couple of other minor violations. Hamilton said the trend was not good.
