World War II Submarine Found Off Aleutian Islands Friday, August 24, 2007 BILLINGS, Mont. — A search team located the mangled remains of a World War II submarine in the Bering Sea off the coast of the Aleutian Islands on Wednesday, culminating a five year search led by submarine commander's sons. The USS Grunion patrolled the Aleutians during the early months of the war. Her last radio message to the submarine base at Dutch Harbor was on July 30, 1942, and described heavy enemy activity at Kiska Harbor. The discovery could help shed light on what happened in the ship's final moments. The team used a remote-controlled vehicle to snap pictures and film the wreckage, which was found under about 1,000 feet of water and had been severely crushed by the water pressure.
