The tradition of college football at Yankee Stadium could be in the embryonic stages of being revived at the new Yankee Stadium.

    Associated Press

Jack Swarbrick, Notre Dame’s athletic director, said the Yankees were open to having college football at the new Stadium, and he would like the Fighting Irish to be the first team to play there. Swarbrick stressed that no dates had been discussed.

I find myself torn on things like this.

While I have full appreciation and respect for the history of the ND-Army-Yankee Stadium angle... It is still Army. The game has changed.

Our history with Navy is one that I'd fight anyone over in terms of keeping the game alive. The history with Army is different. Army falls in line (IMHO) with Florida State, Miami, Oklahoma or other such historical powers that we've played regularly and in marquis games... but they no longer hold that stature. Not that we are any great shakes lately, but we certainly haven't fallen to that level.

Regardless of anyone's feelings about Notre Dame football, this would be a moneymaker!

My first trip to Yankee Stadium was as a sophomomore for the 1963 Thanksgiving Day game vs. Syracuse. It was a student trip to NY via train. Great experience.

While I would like to see a more formidable opponent, such a game would be huge. The tradition of the Yankees, Irish and US Army is unequaled in any one scenario.

I would guess that there are at least 50,000 subway alumni within an hours drive of Yankee Stadium.

    Krebs,

I agree. In fact, I'd say the 50k estimate is waaaaay too low. As you well know, the Irish are well represented with subway alums in NYC and the surrounding (Jersey) areas.

I'm not really pumped, football in a baseball stadium is terrible and I'm sorry I don't really care if we ever play Army again. I like having Navy on the schedule for tradition and I like playing Air Force they are one of the better teams in the Mnt West and the Mtn West is the best non-BCS confernce. But Army doesn't do anything for me.

If we are going to play in the New Yawk area, which I like, I want to play in the New Giants stadium.

I'd venture to say that the Big Apple is ND's home away from home.

I think we tried to get Rutgers to agree to a game like that and since they are a big time program they turned down the idea. UConn is another possible opponent. The problem has been that there just aren't any top teams in the NYC area.
I recall that ND played Army at Shea Stadium my frosh year ('65) and I've been to a Navy game in the Meadowlands.
Jeez all those games I went to at Yankess Stadium (Giants) Shea (Jets) Bush (Cardinals) Cleveland (ND) even the Titans at the Polo Grounds didn't seem so bad.

We didn't want to play Rutgers at their home because of seating capacity (54,000) . Yankee Stadium seats 52,000.

ND's AD said he is talking to Texas and Nebraska about playing there as well.
