For the record there is a lot of weeping and gnashing of teeth on ND boards over this game. Many are against the neutral site game in general and specifcally playing WSU in San Antonio. The feeling is that sure San Antonio but why aren't we playing a Texas school. Or if we are playing WSU why aren't we playing them in Seattle at the Seahawks stadium or something like that. Terry
It's what makes The Irish who they are. Anyone... anyplace. Coast to coast, hot or cold, day or night. Who knows what's next? Maybe the Gators v. Texas in Missoula Mt.
Terry, tell the weepers and teeth gnashers on NDNation to unwad their panties and check their dictionaries for the definition of the word NEUTRAL. If we play a TX team in SA, then it's not neutral, is it? Same with playing Wazzu in Seattle. It's our home game. It's our decision who we play and where. The site is chosen to satisfy OUR fans in the southwest. The game is a guaranteed sellout. If I'm an ND fan anywhere in the southwest, I'm ecstatic. I don't care who they play. Witness Tim's reaction above. Why is that so difficult to for the weepers and teeth gnashers to understand?
Hell, it's just like a midseason bowl game in a very nice location. Some great golf courses in the SA area and for the game you can put on your very favorite costume since it's also Halloween. I think it's a great idea.
It's no big deal to me. Personally though the new scheduling philosophy is not really to my liking. It's what everybody is doing these days. For most of my lifetime as a ND fan we always played home/home series. Our neutral site games really only were with Army and Navy because they had such small on campus stadiums. To me it was sort of a badge of honor, we played all over the country. Now the philosophy is that we will schedule 7 home games 4 road games and 1 neutral site game. The neutral site games will likely be 1 shot games with who ever we play. The 7 home games will of course increase revenue and most if not all of college football has a similar philosophy. They play 4 home conf games and 4 road conference games, then the other 3 or 4 non-conf games are likely to be home contests with decidedly weaker opponents who come to get pasted for the money. I would rather still be playing home/home with our opponents. I know it restricts our revenue to give up a home game. But I still liked that philosophy. With the 12 game seasons I'd like to see us play 6 home and 6 away games against mostly BCS conference teams with Mtn West teams filling in 1 game a year (BYU, Air Force traditionally) and of course Navy. I don't really care to play Army anymore. Esp in a season where we already play Air Force and/or Navy. Playing all 3 service academies while no worse than (and likely tougher than) playing Ark State, Rice, UCF which are 3 of Texas non-conf opponents still always gets us the derision of the media, other teams fans, etc when strength of schedule comes up. Terry
Terry I'm not sure but I think that the road teams in our NBC games get a pretty nice payday. These home on neutral sites are a win-win for both teams. While our return games in a home and home would give the other school a home gate, the TV revenue is probably much less.
How about a Home/Home with Alabama <r>Saban says he wants it but I don't think Alabama would add another road game without a reciprocal home game. Apparently the ND AD said recently that with ND's traditional opponents and a Big East agreement to play 3 home and homes (?) it couldn't be fit in in the foreseeable future. That almost sounds like a conference schedule. <E>:?</E></r>
kp there is talk that UM wants to opt out of their spot on the Irish schedule, if that happens then we'll need an elite opponent to take that early season home/home spot. Most people want to rotate teams like Alabama, Tenn, Texas, Ohio State, etc into that spot. One thing about Tenn is that they are one of the few big time programs who will play an out of conference team in the middle of their conference schedule. We've always played Tenn mid to late in the year. There was a time that we played Penn State late in the year, but that was before they joined the B10. Most would like 3 elite opponents on the schedule for home/home, 1 early, USC mid season and 1 late...the years we play USC in LA late then the 3rd elite would play ND home mid season.
