Looks like a great pick up for ND. Sheldon Day (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) defensive tackle has committed to Notre Dame. Day, who was named the top defensive lineman at The Opening in Oregon, gives the Irish their third in-state commitment on the year. Day had been offered by Arkansas, Cincinnati, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Penn State, Purdue, Stanford, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and Wisconsin.
ND <r>at 6'2" 283 now as a HS senior looks like Day give us some future help to plug the middle in the 3-4 defense. <E></E></r>
ND <t>for a coach known for offense, Kelly sure recruits well on the Defensive side of the ball!<br/> <br/> <br/> 30 days till ND football boys!!</t>
ND <t>I believe you're right. He just got back from Auburn. Scout has him as a 5 star, Rivals at 4.</t>
ND <t>sounds like he was afraid he would lose his offer. Maybe the talk about the DT from NY area was scaring him. I don't think we are gonna take more than 2 DTs.</t>
I read somewhere that one of the ND commits is a good friend of his and was working on him. Apparently, the kid got the job done. I had read about him months ago in the Indy newspaper, but like Tim said, Warren Central has so many D-1 recruits from year to year, I didn't consider it a big deal. Now that he's an ND commit, I'll pay close attention to his on-field performance this fall, along with the DB from Cathedral.
ND <r>Well my how things have change...any of you Irish fans out there ever think there would come a day when we would be turning <B><s></s>down<e></e></B> highly touted DLs? that is exactly what happened to the Schutt kid from Illinois. He was set to make a visit and very high on ND but after Day committed the staff called him and told him there is no room for him now. Amazing! We would have died to get a DL of his quality before. My guess is with what ND has on hand now at the DT position and with Nix having 4 years of eligibility left plus the addition of Day to this recruiting class it's just not a position of need now. With the 3-4 defense I guess it doesn't make much sense to keep more than 3 or 4 at the most DLs on the roster. I do understand they are still goin after the DT from the NY area though.</r>
Tim interesting reaction to signing Day, a lot of people are wondering why we took Day over Tommy Schutt. Suddenly he's got a lot of fans on Irish boards, and he did tell somebody (Hansen, Sampson, Franks I forget) that he was ready to commit to ND on his visit. When Day went to that Oregon Camp a month ago and came away with honors everybody was worried he would go to the SEC or Michigan, now they wish they had "Tommy Schutt. Can't please everybody. But I'm reading from cooler heads that the staff is not done with DL and that Jones is still being recruited and so is Armistead and both of those guys are higher rated than Tommy Schutt.
NF <r>Jaron Jones, DT from NY committed to ND today. Depending on the recruiting service, he is listed as a 4 or 5 star. Sweet! <E></E></r>
 Kelly is sure stacking up some big bodies on defense. The previous two coaches could never get those guys, but Kelly is getting them in droves...
There are a lot of "short" fields in Notre Dame's future the way Kelly is stockpiling big time talent on defense.
ND <r>JO'Co,<br/> <br/> Its like I said before, we would have given anything to get DTs like these. I honestly didn't think we would ever see the day when we could get kids like these in the numbers we have. <E></E></r>
We've got at least three freshmen on defense who would be starting at 80% of the teams in college football. And all of this in about three years time.....
