truth be told, I would honestly like to see them divide the kids up evenly between the classes and give each coach a month to prepare just to see what would happen. http://www.southbendtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070301/NDSports02/703010408/-1/NDSPORTS Article published Mar 1, 2007 Golden boy to share spotlight ERIC HANSEN Tribune Staff Writer SOUTH BEND -- Jimmy Clausen won't be the biggest name at the 2007 Blue-Gold Game after all. The vaunted Notre Dame freshman, vying to be the Irish quarterback of the future, will have to share the attention with a bit of ND's past. Former Notre Dame coaches Ara Parseghian and Lou Holtz will serve as guest coaches for the ND intrasquad scrimmage that wraps up spring practice. The Blue-Gold Game is set for April 21 in Notre Dame Stadium. The Irish kick off spring practice March 21.Parseghian, who coached at ND from 1964-74, will be assisted by two of his former assistant coaches, Brian Boulac and Joe Yonto. Former Irish All-America defensive lineman Ross Browner will serve as honorary captain for Parseghian's team. Holtz (1986-96) will be assisted by Foge Fazio and Tony Yelovich. Tony Rice, who quarterbacked the Irish to their most recent national championship (1988), will serve as honorary captain for Holtz's team. Zbikowski tickets The first allotment of tickets for Notre Dame safety Tom Zbikowski's charity boxing match Tuesday night at the Century Center sold out in nine hours. Limited additional tickets have been added and are available at CJ's Pub at 417 N. Michigan St., in South Bend and at Between The Buns at 1803 South Bend Ave., in South Bend. Tickets are $100, $50, and $20. Proceeds will go to the following charities: Hannah & Friends, Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.Final combine numbers Irish safety Chinedum Ndukwe was the last of the eight Notre Dame players to go through the physical testing/psychological probing at the NFL Scouting Combine, which concluded Tuesday. Ndukwe's measurables were 4.51 in the 40-yard dash, 15 bench press reps at 225 and 37 1/2 inches in the vertical jump. ND running back Darius Walker's vertical leap of 40 1/2 inches ended up being tied for the third best of the combine -- behind only New Mexico's Quincy Black (41 1/2) and Boise State's Gerald Alexander. The fastest 40 time was turned in by Kansas State wide receiver Yamon Figurs (4.3), while the best bench press performance was 42 reps by North Carolina State defensive tackle Tank Tyler.
Brady Quinn, QB, not only outbenched all other QBs by a wide margin but I believe he outbenched all of the other ND participants, including the O-linemen. That explains a few things about last season and may suggest a new strength coach is in order at The Dome.
I saw some reports that Jamarcus Russell showed up at the combine seriously out of shape...fat to be frank. As far as the Blue and Gold game, that's nice to have Lou and Ara back on the sidelines, even symbolically. I am surprised to see Foge Fazio, he only lasted one season or 2 at the most with Holt, 86-87 and Holtz fired him and promoted Barry Alavarez to DCoord. I figured Foge might not exactly be the typical ND legacy type of coach like the ones that Ara has with him. Terry
My son received a personalized letter from Coach Holtz inviting him and his wife to a dinner following the game, which he is hosting for "...all the former ND players who represented the Irish during my 11 years as coach." In the letter Coach Holtz says, "You will be my guest for dinner but you will have to endure one more boring speech from me."
Sid Lou's never given a boring speech in his life. Was there a PS to Brian asking him not to bring his dad?('')
LOL! Judy and I will have babysitting duty. I definitely am looking forward to reporting on the event.
