I was just looking at Irish Sports Daily, which is Mike Franks Notre Dame site. He has listed 11,400 members at 99/yr. That's over 1 million dollars a year in membership fees. His site also has advertising on it, have no clue as to what that generates. WOW.... and he's hardly the biggest site on the Internet.
