If you get by the front page and go to your conference some of you might find this more interesting. I didn't post it because of what he said about the SEC on the front page but because of what I found in some of the conference surveys. Main rivals, etc.
Bill if the impossible happened and Urban Meyer actually did take the ND job, what do you think the reaction would be in Fla? Would he have to move his family to an undisclosed location?
Terry, there would be anger and hostility toward Notre Dame. There would be a deep sense of betrayal toward Urban. And while I don't think they would have to go hide I do think that if I were in their shoes I would leave Gainesville as soon as possible. Not because of fear but Gainesville is not a really big town and the University of Florida is a major part of the culture. However I don't believe that will happen.
Terry, the next question might be, if that disaster befell the Gators where would we look for a coach? Probably about the same one's on your list with one addition, Shanahan. He has ties to the Gators and some people thought we might get him when we got Zook. But ain't going to happen.
Bill, You do have to understand that it is a possibility. If he has jumped ship before, he could do the same again. I'm not saying he will, just that it is a possibility. He professed loyalty to two other teams/schools and left. That has to be in the back of your mind when he says he is loyal to Florida. What he has going in your favor is that his previous jumps have been "promotions". This would be more like a lateral move.
At this point Tom I don't agree with you. I think that most coaches that get an opportunity to move up the chain from Bowling Green to Utah to Florida would be considered a natural progression for a coach. Since Meyer had the opportunity to choose Notre Dame or Florida once before and chose Florida I am not nervous. I don't see any inconsistency. You can be loyal to your school but also be willing to accept a job at a school like Notre Dame, Tennessee or Florida. The only thing that would give me a little angst is the way we do know that Meyer feels about Notre Dame. But here's my prediction, come next season Meyer will be coaching Florida and Notre Dame will have one of those other guys on their list, like Brian Kelly. Of course there will still be some writers who can't get an interview with Meyer who will write like they know something that he is leaving. Such is the way of life.
I think you do agree with me... at least by what you just said: That is what I meant by: The previous moves he made were the natural progression. The move to Notre Dame would be more of a lateral move.
I understand Tom, my real point is that I am not nervous. A quote from Meyer in a press conference today.
Tom, considering the comparison between the two programs over the past several years, that's a nice compliment. Thanks. Bill, a minor correction. Meyer was head coach of Bowling Green in the MAC, not Miami of Ohio. Miami, OH always has been known as the Cradle of Coaches. Alumni include Earl "Red" Blaik, Paul Brown, Woody, Bo, Ara, John Pont, Paul Dietzel, Weeb Eubank, Bill Mallory, Jim Tressel, and, yes, Ron Zook. While Meyer is well on his way to greatness, he got his basic training at another MAC school.
Sid, thanks, I corrected it to Bowling Green. Thanks for the compliment, but I would still consider the move from Florida to Notre Dame a lateral. In past years I could not have made that statement.
This is an interesting point. 15 years ago it would have been a compliment to Fla to say this and now it's the other way around. I think what happens next is crucial to this comparison. If Meyer keeps hitting homers at UF while at the same time ND somehow whiffs on the next hire I'm not sure you can continue to say it. This next hire for ND therefore is absolutely crucial and by the way....I still believe the guy I met at the bar in Lexington back in 2005 who claimed to have negotiated Meyer's contracts at Utah and Florida and who emphatically stated that Meyer was never leaving if the school would have him.
So Shelly Meyer says they are staying at Florida, then at the press conference today Urban Meyer says he's staying at Florida as long as they will have him and then Tim Tebow says Urban Meyer is staying at Florida. So there you have it. Meyer Staying At Florida
Coach Tebow.....gotta nice ring to it.. 8) "Tebow added that he would consider coaching at Florida down the road, once his playing days are over. Meyer first mentioned the possibility a few years ago. "He actually always gives me a hard time about that, saying one day how I'm going to be in his seat and coaching here," Tebow said. "I don't know. That's something that intrigues me ... being able to coach them as far as life experiences and football. "I like being able to correlate the two. ... I think I'd enjoy it. That door will never be closed for me." Can you imagine the recruiter he would make?
I've heard that Meyer is stepping aside so that Tebow can be the next head coach of the Gators. BTW Stoops held a press conference today and supposedly nobody asked him about the ND job, a sure sign that he's signed the contract already. OU AD will bring Kevin Summlin back to take over the program.
