The first four teams in the BCS this week are Missouri W. Virginia Ohio State Georgia So if no other team would leapfrog any of these if they don't lose, and Missouri would lose to Oklahoma ( highly possible ) and Pitt would upset W. Virginia (not very likely) then it could be Ohio State vs a 2 loss Georgia team who will not even be in the SEC Championship game. Unreal that the SEC could put a two loss team in the BCS Championship game that didn't make the SEC Championship game. And I would give the Dawgs a very good chance of winning.
And they will still tell us this is better than a playoff... This year is a great example of why we so desperately DO need a playoff. Who's the best? Everyone has an opinion, and you can bet we won't have a definitive answer once the BCS stink settles after the bowls. This has been a great year in my book!
Well, look no further than the "coaches" poll which has a team with absolutely no chance at a conference title ranked ahead of 5 or 6 teams which do. And these guys are top college football coaches????????
Bill, from my perspective, your point simply highlights the absurdity of the process......a system where popularity counts more than on the field results. Absurd.....that said, I would much prefer the prospect of facing Matt Stafford than Pat White.....anyday. With all due respect to the Dawgs - they are a fine, fine team and have had an outstanding season, but White and Slaton are scary good.....
I am really hoping for a Mizzou/WVa shoot out in the NC game. Then send Ohio State to the Rose Bowl for the USC game. Both should be really good games. I'd really hate to see an Illinois/USC Rose Bowl. I'd sort of feel cheated.
I'd hate to have anything detract from the hype that will surround the Buckeye/USC game next September in LA.....it will be quite a circus. Till then...... BOOMER SOONER baby..... 8)
With all of the upsets this year, it is gong down to the final week, anything is still possible. While Ohio State could easily jump t the #2 spot with a loss by Missouri, I think we would have our hands full with West Virginia. I think we all agree the BSC will never be a perfect system. I agree with Buckeye Terry, it often seems to be more of a popularity contest. Don
UGA to the Rose Bowl if they don't snub 'em. USC vs. UGA? As for a playoff? UGA is pretty hot right now, It would be interesting.
I don't see how Georgia possibly could end up in the NC game. Even if MO and WV lose and OSU moves up to #1 by default, I would think a 2-loss conference champ would leapfrog UGA much like FL leapfrogged MI last year. That would mean either 2-loss LSU or 2-loss OK would be in the NC game over 2-loss UGA. Of course, if both LSU and OK lose, that means Mizzou has held onto its rank and is in.
I know it's easy to see how the bowl system sucks but isn't that one of the things that makes the game great? I know you've heard all of the arguments before but here are a few reasons I like the bowl system: 1) Endless speculation and conversation 2) The regular season really matters. I don't keep up with the NFL reg. season that much except to keep up with my fantasy stats because there isn't as great of a premium on winning every game as there is in college. Of course, don't tell that to the Patriots. 3) Is a team like Georgia, for example, really that deserving of a national title shot? Many people would say no. 4) Bad publicity is better than no publicity. Say what you want about MLB but since the steroids mess, baseball's popularity has gone up. Even after it has been exposed baseball is still more popular than it was in say, 1995. The same can be said about CFB. For all you want to say about how bad it is, it still gets people excited. Now, let it be known that I am in favor of a plus 1 scenario but that's it. No 8 or 16 team playoff. It would generate tremendous buzz but we all love college football and we love discussing it. Would it be as much fun if 8 or 16 teams had a shot at the title at the end of the season? I, for one, don't think so.
Apples & oranges. All sports in which multiple games can be played in a 7-day span, thus allowing large numbers of participants. Like it or not, college football's popularity does not depend on a playoff system.
Sid, I tend to agree with you as to what would happen with Georgia if W. Virginia got upset. What I said was that if no team jumped another. Having said that though, it is possible that no one would jump Georgia and they would end up in the BCS Championship game. But W. Virginia getting upset is a long shot at best and I think they have the highest probability of any of the top teams of being in the Championship game. If so whoever plays them needs to talk to S. Florida who seems to have the Mountaineers number.
If there is a playoff <t>right now no one would want any part of USC or Georgia. Two talented young teams that finally hit their stride (got healthy)...<br/> <br/> As for the talk about playoff vs BCS.....<br/> <br/> Here's the deal.. This system doesn't offer us jack sh*t that is better than the old bowl system. We have every bit as many disputed titles. The reason you don't hear more about them is that the BCS does all it can to marginalize and diminish anyone who dare not play the game their way..<br/> <br/> And even when you think you are playing their way... they can pull the strings on you for not reading the fine print.<br/> <br/> F*ck this whole system... Give me the old, crazy 36hours of football with the wild speculation of 'who will be #1' that remains a mystery until you wake up the next morning.<br/> <br/> All this current system does is increase the drama and speculation while maximizing the $$ value...and worst, marginalizing a section of the division I college football world.</t>
p.s. <t>Since I realize that college football has totally sold any and all of its tradition down the road for the BCS, I'd just as soon skip the farce and get on with the playoff.</t>
The benefit that USF had that no one else had was a Pat White injury that sat him down in the 2nd qtr of that game.....and what a differnce one player in that system makes - see Oregon minus Dennis Dixon. I would much rather face Georgia or USC - with all due respect to both, they are great teams - than White and Slaton running that offense to perfection - any day. We have struggled to solve that offense for years......the only teams to beat us since 2004 - ILL, UF, TX, PSU (with Robinson at QB) ALL have employed that attack or some close variant thereof......NOBODY runs it better than WVa or has more lethal weapons in White and Slaton.
While I certainly understand OSU fans wanting into the BCS game, that's pretty natural. But as a fan without a dog in the fight, I would much rather see WVA vs Mizzou because I think it's a better match up of teams and the game has a chance to be very competitive. I think the Ohio State defense is build perfectly to stop a team like WVA. They are very fast on defense and that is the key. I fear if we have a WVA/OSU matchup it will be another asskicking this time OSU doing the kicking. I think the two best matchups from a fans standpoint will be WVA/Missouri and Ohio State/USC.
