I had read this article earlier Bill. With all of the recent QB transfers, it should prove to be an interesting football season. One thing for certain with Ohio State, is if Justin Fields gets hurt, we are in deep trouble! Our two best backups transferred out to other schools. Pantry is almost bare with any real experience.
Don, from what I have heard about Fields ability I believe he will do well. The Gators wanted him badly when he went to Georgia.
Bill, Hurts handled himself perfectly during his time at Alabama under what I'm sure was a very challenging time. I'm pulling for him too.
I see that FSU, who picked up 2 QB transfers this year is going with Blackmon who has been there all along and started in 2017 when D'ondre Francois went down. One of the transfers was a 3 year starter at Wisconsin, I wonder why he transferred, FSU looked like a dumpster fire last year while Wisconsin has been the model of stability as a program.
I can see why QB's want to transfer if they are not going to be the starter. It's really the one position on the team that if you aren't the starter you aren't getting much if any playing time, unless of course it's in a blowout in the 4th qtr and even then most coaches are not letting you air it out in those circumstances and you're also playing with backups. So if you want to show what you can do and have a shot at the NFL you have to play, as some wise College QB said once, if you're not good enough to play on Saturday you're not likely to play on Sunday. This years class of transfers is very interesting with Hurts and Fields leading the way. I am very interested in how Kelly Bryant and Brandon Wimbush do, both QB's whose record as a starter is pretty darn good to say the least, but they didn't show that they were great passers and that is why they got "passed" by Trevor Lawrence and Ian Book respectively. I'm also totally 100% behind a graduate going anywhere that will have him and getting to play right away. Which is what Bryant, Hurts, and Wimbush have done. It's their reward for being good students and taking care of business in the classroom. I do have an issue with Fields and some of the others who got immediate playing time with murky circumstances, IMHO. I like the whole idea of the transfer portal, as I've said before it puts it all out there above board. No having your HS coach talk to a coach at school X about would his player be welcome as a transfer, stuff like that. I do think it's been over worked and there are a lot of kids who ended up in the portal and didn't have any offers and now for the most part aren't welcome back on their old team. I think we'll see the volume of players entering the portal decline due to that fact. Not only is the grass not always greener, turns out there also isn't always any grass at all.
Just read a little while ago that Baldwin, a trf from Ohio State to TCU has been granted elgibility on appeal to play this season, with some prodding from Ohio State.
Well the transfer QB's had a pretty good start for the most part... Tate Martell is moving to WR at Miami. Blake Barnett (multiple transfers) at USF....got smoked by Wisc. Hunter Johnson at Northwestern a 5 star from Clemson...didn't even start Brandon Wimbush from ND to UCF had a good game Kelly Bryant from Clemson to Missouri had a good game even though Missouri lost Justin Fields from Georgia to Ohio State had a great game Jalen Hurts from Alabama to OU is having a great game so far. Jacob Eason a 5 star from Georgia to Washington had a great game.
Hurts had great game for Oklahoma. He seems to be thriving. His passing accuracy was right on and his running ability has never been a problem. Good for him.
Well I think Hurts put himself squarely in the Heisman race. 500 yards passing and rushing combined, 3 TD's each wow!
I'm not saying Hurts ain't in a great place (he did fantastic for a first game in a new system)... but that Houston defense was ranked WAY down last year, and that was with Ed Oliver. Not exactly elite competition. I think at the end he'll be in the conversation, but this game wasn't much of a test.
Scott, 500 yards of offense for a QB is pretty impressive no matter who they played. The Oklahoma defense doesn't look very good, as usual.
Well it will certainly change as the season goes on, last year there was a point where everybody conceded it to Tua, but then Kyler Murray's numbers were so ridiculous that he over came that loss to Texas while Tua never lost a game and had some incredible numbers as well. You might say Tua played tougher competition, but sometimes the story becomes the factor. I think Murray being a future baseball player was important as will Hurt having lost his job to Tua inspite of having a gaudy record as a starter at 'Bama. But a long way to go, maybe it'll be the RB from Wisconsin this year, he had a great start vs USF. Johnathan Taylor. Maybe Trevor Lawrence will go undefeated and put up ridiculous numbers, his story could be that he's the most NFL ready college QB since maybe Peyton Manning or John Elway
Hey, Tua completed over 80% of his passes, 4 TDs, 0 ints. over 300 yds, but once again he only played 3 qtrs. This hurt him last year too.
