This is the first year for this event. It replaces the Publix on their calendar. From what I was told they felt the Publix was an outdated event. It originally was the Amateur Championship for those who didn't belong to Country Clubs which dominated US AM's back in the day.

So this is the replacement. My Nephew Matt and his HS golf teammate who played 4 years at IU, while Matt was at Texas A&M made the fied, it's a team event of course.

They Tee off Thurs at 8:24. Drew his teammate is in Grad school in Louisville and between the weather and studies hasn't had much time to prepare and Matt has been very busy with his job as well so they are hoping to just have fun and maybe they'll get lucky!

Of course about 2 miles away will be some other event called the WGC Match Play Championship at Harding Park, but who cares about minor events like that! :) Some guy named Jordan is going to play, but I've never hoid of da bum, to quote a famous resident of Nebraska. :)

Interesting changes in the Match Play Championship. They've taken a page out of the World Cup and made the opening matches round robin play in groups of 4. On Fri. there will be one winner coming out of the 16 groups. Part of the past problem (ratings wise) was that often the top names were out on the first day. This way, a first day loss doesn't mean elimination and every player will play 3 matches.
Rumor has it, that the changes were made because of feared competition from the Amateur 4 ball competition. :)

I like the new format for the WGC, too often in the past some of the top players were out after day 1. Not that upsets shouldn't happen, but I think the group format to determine the final 16 will be exciting and talent should win out. Winner will play 7 matches in 5 days, seems like it might favor the younger players though.

Matt and Drew +3 in first round of stroke play. The leading team is at -6. They will have to go low today if they want to make the cut. They played the Ocean Course yesterday, the Lake Course today.

The Guys shot even yesterday, for 143 total. Cut was at 139. They have had a great time and the course was in great shape and a real experience to play.

In other golf news....Lindsey Vonn dumped Tiger Woods. They said it was mutual of course. :)
