Watching that play on Saturday night made me think that Les Miles may indeed have the biggest pair on the planet but I simply don't think that's the case. I think this guy is so arrogant and ignorant that he thinks he can make any call and his players will make it work. That was one of the dumbest calls I've seen. Does this guy think he's playing Playstation where there's nothing but personal pride at stake? It's only a matter of time before the talent is in a down year and his "gutsy" calls get him run out of town because he can't back 'em up.
Interesting theory is that Les "already knows" he's headed to Michigan for the 2008 season so he doesn't really have anything to lose by "playing" on the edge. If that's not the case ... he's a wild man!!!!!!
Whoa there, Nellie. I watched the entire game and saw the play, and I strongly disgree. What in the hell is with this media-wide mindset of criticizing a gutsy call that worked? Every single criticism I've seen, including the ESPN play-by-play guy, claims that if the receiver in the end zone misses the pass, the clock runs out. Bull roar. They showed the replay several times and there clearly were 3-4 seconds left when the ball hit his hands. If he misses it, there is time to do exactly what they planned to do in the event of a missed pass, i.e., kick a field goal. Read my lips....The clock would not have run out. I guess the critics simply do not want to be confused by the facts. I have no interest in the success or failure of LSU or their coach, but for the life of me I do not understand the mob-mentality criticism that has followed that play.
And the reason that most coaches only make those calls rarely is because the odds are against you. When the odds start to even out (and they will), he will return crashing to earth.
Look, I just question the guy's coaching ability. If it were this one play then that would be one thing. The guy went 5 FOR 5 on 4th downs to beat Florida. He got 'em all so he's a genius. The guy throws with little time left to score a TD against Auburn. He's a genius. The guy runs the ball 4 straight times against Kentucky and loses. He's a goat. All I'm saying is with all the questionable playcalls eventually he may get run out of town unless, of course, he leaves first as was implied here. I don't think he's a very good coach.
As I see it four things could have happened on that pass play It could be complete and they win the game It could have been incomplete but time left on the clock, they kick a field goal and win the game. It could have been intercepted and they lose the game It could have been incomplete but juggled and the clock runs out and they lose. Personally I wouldn't like those odds as a coach and would have played for the field goal. So far Miles is coming up lucky on all his gambles, frequently that leads to an unbelievable season and maybe a National Championship. But if he continues this way I think he will eventually fail often enough to bring down the wrath of the fans. But hey, I hope we make it to the SEC Championship game to play them again and they have to make five fourth down plays to beat us again.
Me too Bill because my guess is that LSU misses on one of LM's gambles and then he is left to face the LSU mob all winter about why he did it. If that pass vs. Auburn was dropped and the game was AT Auburn then I would bet my house the time would have raced off that clock before stopping thanks to the local timekeeper. Saw one second get stretched to 5 by a local MSU timekeeper vs. Michigan a few years back so it can happen. At Ole Miss this year it took 4 seconds off the clock when Tebow spiked the ball near the end of the first half even though the ball struck the turf with 3 seconds to go. At LSU though that clock would have moved like a turtle I'll bet if the pass was not caught.
Woody hayes used to say that three things can happen on a pass play and two of them are bad. So he ran. and ran. and ran. and ran. Tu salud, Les Miles
The "Les to Michigan" theme is played on the internet a lot but a couple things might prevent this: 1. $$$. If LSU wants to keep Him, Michigan will not pony up the money that LSU would be willing to pay. 2. Les has the reputation of a loose cannon and had a run in with Carr over recruiting. Michigan is very conservative concerning the reputation it wishes to project regarding its football program and even a loss to App State will not change that outlook. Miles also has a pretty poor track record re player graduation. While a vast majority of the M fans would be in favor of Miles' hiring, especillay considering that he was one of "Bo's boys", this is not a program that has overly focused upon fan opinion. However, losing to Ohio State 5 out of the last 6 years and big $$ stadium improvements, may air brush away some of Les' flaws in the minds of our administators if they are convinced he could turn this trend around....
this game <t>was lost when Tubesteak didn't challenge that spot.

Now way that's a first down. They gave him the bounce on the ground plus 2 feet.

I think Les got burned against Kentucky, but his 'gambles' paid off against Florida and Auburn.

If he gambles even once against Alabama and it doesn't pay off, Saban will mindf*ck him all the way back to Ann Arbor.

For those who don't know, the LSU fans sincerely believe that they win in spite of Miles. He isn't that popular there.</t>
