Interesting article. I think he will get the Aggies in competition in the west. However the competition in the SEC West is fierce. https://www.si.com/college-football/2018/06/28/jimbo-fisher-contract-texas-am-aggies-fsu
Everybody always thinks places like UF and FSU have money to burn on football and do so willingly. But that article points out that Fisher was at odds with FSU over the facilities he thought they needed to keep up, and they were tired of him asking for more. I remember reading that it was an issue for Jim MacElwain at UF that the felt the Gators weren't investing enough in football to keep up with the Alabama's of the SEC. Texas A&M on the other hand has been on a facility building binge and they have amongst the best football facilities in the SEC. Nobody has what Alabama has built but A&M does have great facilities. No doubt the big $$ guaranteed was a huge factor but no doubt he saw what A&M had built and felt like that was a great situation for him. He'd finally have the support that he felt like he needed to compete with the Alabama's and the Clemson's and now the Georgia's.
I do feel as if I now understand more about the leap that Fisher made. No guarantees over in the cannibalistic SEC West that he will win championships though. Urban did his new job magic thing in the somewhat average at the time Big Ten ( much improved now I think ) Fisher has a lot to prove...
Terry, our new AD is rapidly upgrading our facilities. However they don't get built overnight and meanwhile we lag somewhat.
That's probably as good an explanation as any I've seen. The money had to be there, but mostly it was the willingness of the A&M administration to "do what it takes" to be at the top level that pushed Jimbo to accept. There are never any guarantees in football, but I don't think there was a better hire out there other than maybe Saban. It'll take a little bit to stock the pantry with top level talent, but the class that's being assembled for 2019 looks to be a good start.
