Boise St. is paired with TCU in the Fiesta. Guess that the BCS didn't want their teams humiliated again as Ok and Ala. have been. It's not too obvious is it?
Terrible thing to be a college football fan isn't it. I think those two are paired because the Fiesta Bowl wanted them and think it will be a big draw. At last that's what I read. I wish TCU were going to the Sugar Bowl but I don't see much difference in them and Cincy.
Anyone here know how the the selection process played out? I thought the order of selection was Sugar, Fiesta, and then the Orange which was already locked in with GT. My guess is that the Sugar picked Florida, the Fiesta picked TCU, and the Orange took Iowa. That would have left the SB the choice of either Cinncinatti or BS. Maybe it is just me but I would think that a Boise/Florida would generate bigger ratings than Cinncinatti given what happened the last time Boise was in a bowl game. The end result of the BCS is that they have ruined the luster of the traditional bowl games while failing to reach their goal of fairly putting together a no. 1 versus no. 2 match up. They would be better off junking the BCS and grafting a playoff sytem onto the tradional bowl games.
Who should the Fiesta have chosen? I mean Cincy being from the weakest Big East conference would be just as big an upset if they pull it off over UF as TCU or Boise State. I would have liked to have seen Iowa vs Boise, Cincy/UF, and Ga.Tech/TCU as the lineup. But overall the whole lineup is very unattractive to me at least. In the End this gives TCU an excellent chance to finish the season as the #2 team in the country. Not a bad concilliation prize if you can't play for #1.
I have a different take on the TCU/BSU matchup. I think it will generate more interest than if either team was matched with a Florida or a Ga. Tech or an Iowa. Two unbeatens going at each other. I don't have a problem with it, but I agree with others who characterize the BCS matchups in general as not so interesting. I'll watch the games because that's what the holidays are for. If these are the kind of BCS matchups we can look forward to in the future, I agree with Bobda's suggestion of junking the BCS and going to a playoff.
In looking at the games, which games, other than the Texas/Alabama game, jump out at you as ones you really want to watch? For me, games that I am interested in are Stanford/Oklahoma in the Sun Bowl, NW versus Auburn, OSU v. Oregon. The Ariz/Nebraska game is interesting just to see the type of beer that BDR and AJ will put up as a wager.
Boise State and TCU played in a bowl game last year. I enjoyed the game. Boise struck first, TCU won late. I wanted the Gators matched up with one of Cincy, TCU and Boise for a number of reasons. Two of them are ranked higher and I want to see just how good those teams are. I do wish Boise and TCU were playing more traditional powers but I also think the Fiesta Bowl wanted that game.
as the guy who said 'i told ya so' I told ya so. You can now write off the loser as a fraud and the winner as a fraud who never plays 'real teams'...... We saw this play out in their bowl game last year. These are teams who are dying to get at the alleged 'best' because they are kept out of the title games. The big boys won't schedule them and if they do, its only in their back yards on their rules with their refs. The one place these teams had to hope for in terms of getting at the big boys was the BCS. At first the BCS tried excluding them... that didn't work.. So they let them in and that made things worse because they won.. so they cut them back out. Now they can come back in, but they get to play each other. f*cking joke.. The funniest thing is watching some people still tow the company line that 'hey, if it creates a good buzz than it is good for the game. Cha-ching, the BCS works..' Nothing can be more short sighted..
I think Boise and Florida would have been a great match-up. It's certainly would have been a game that I wouldn't have missed. PJ in Jersey
Having slept a night following the bowl matchups, I'm changing my mind on the Boise/TCU matchup. The more I think about it, the more sense it would make to match each team with a BCS "power" team. The problem this year is, after Florida, who can you label a BCS "power" team? IMO the only way you could get two definitive matchups would be to split up the two Rose Bowl teams. Given Boise beat Oregon early in the season, you could match up Oregon/TCU and Boise/Ohio State. I agree with TOK that any one of the three cinderellas should be matched up with Florida, which is what has happened.
Cinci is the third rated team in the BCS.....UF #5. Cinci is the highest rated team other than the title game participants. Seems pretty fair to me.
I could see UF beating TCU in an LSU type game 13-3. After the head scratching defensive meltdown for Florida vs. Bama I can see Cinici's offense causing quite a few problems if UF showed up as listless as they appeared last Sat. They looked like they were collectively on a 5 day hangover from the mega party Dunlap must have attended.
Somehow Corey I can envision that if we were playing TCU you would say we should play the highest ranked team, Cincy. I agree with the folks who say Florida should play one of Cincy, TCU, Boise, and we are. I would welcome playing any one of the three. Game on.
Again beyond Alabama/Texas this is the most ho hum group of BCS games I can remember in a long time. I don't think you could shuffle them any way that would make them compelling to anybody other than the fans of the 2 schools. I'll bet that tickets to the game will be discounted and that except for the Rose Bowl they'll all be less than sellouts.
In terms of ranking, Bill, the SB made the logical choice. My comment was more in terms of fan interest and TV ratings in that the average football fan, I suspect, would be more interested in a Boise/Fla just to see if David could rock a large conference Goliath again or whether Flordia would stomp on Boise. In terms of Cinncy/Florida, I suspect that Meyer will make sure that the Gators will not show up with a post SEC-championship game hangover and will make like miserable for the Bearcats.
