This is a bit surprising to me. Wonder who W. Virginia gets? Dana Holgorsen will reportedly leave West Virginia to take over as Houston coach
Houston at best is a lateral move. Even if he wins at Houston, he'll have a hard time getting to a New Years 6 bowl at best. At West Virginia at least all of that was on the table. But listening to him today in the run up to the Texans/Colts game he talked about how much he loved living in Houston. Also talked about his relationship with Tillman Fertitta who the Billionaire that essentially runs the Houston Cougars. I'm sure Tillman convinced him that not only would he have unlimited resources, but that he would be the coach to force the Cougars into the B12.
I would be very surprised if the BigXII ever takes Houston. They add NOTHING to the league... you already have those TVs.
KP, He'll get better athletes. He's putting himself on the outside of the NY6 bowl alignment, but that may not be around too much longer anyway. I'd stack the talent in a 100 mi radius around Houston with the greatest classes WVa has ever landed, except at Houston he'll have them every year. Also, beaches, T-top Trans Am markets and an alcohol friendly environment. Houston is basically Holgoland. They're gonna love each other.
Corey, if you say so. It just appears to me that Houston has to recruit against Texas and A&M and TCU and Baylor and Oklahoma and LSU among others. And they haven't done that well in that arena in the past. WVU came within a couple of points of winning the Big 12.
Yeah there is a lot of talent with in 100 miles of Houston but he's not beating out B12 and SEC for that top talent. He's going to work with mostly the leftovers, which might still be talented if coached up.
Even if Houston only gets the best of the P5 remainders, it's likely to be talent on par or a step below with what WV gets. Even that is probably better talent than most G5 teams, at least providing reason to believe Houston could take a shot at ruling the G5 roost. As far as WV winning the B12, even that wouldn't have been good enough for the CFP, which we all can agree is not happening for any G5 team as things currently stand. However, the chance at a NY6 at WV, competing with tu, OU, TCU in the B12 with inferior talent to them vs. competing with all other G5 teams with arguably superior talent makes NY6 access similar, if not advantageous. The wildcard is the future permutation of the CFP, which could help or hinder Houston depending on how that develops.
